You cannot be forced into sunday working unless employee and employer both agree to it, or it is included in your contract of employment . Because it's the law, you have a legal right to opt out from Sunday working in a retail shop or betting shop in some instances

pointless made up topic with no lead to it "Puppetmaster wrote:Heard from different sources ,strong rumour of 2014 Sunday working .
Most likely voluntary ,delivering packets but the 2 sides cannot agree on a pay rate .
The current view point of many I know is Sunday working pay rate is a joke !
Why every xmas they struggle to get guys in to cover packets as the pay rate is a joke.

Re: 2014 Sunday working rumour
I along with a couple of other senior reps were at a postal conference where Royal Mail , TNT , Fed Ex , Ups and dozens of other parcels and post companies were present. Amazon and numerous other providers and mailing companies were there..
There is no doubt the providers like Amazon want a Sunday service and Royal Mails parcels strategy manager Nixk Langdon said he believed it would happen with Royal Mail within the next 3 years but would be unpopular with staff and the CWU. Other providers were saying they would do it if they gain a share of Royal Mails parcels business. The mailing houses were also nervous as to what would be the extra cost for working Sunday and would the customer be willing to pay that Sunday premium. Other companies were saying they would not ask for an increase cost for delivering Sunday .
So I do think that Sunday working will come to Royal Mail but it will be more in line with the way Sunday collections were performed which was voluntary on SA and it will not be part of the USO.
However in the long term if requirement for Sunday deliveries grew then who knows what could happen.
But like I say I don't think it is imminent.

Re: 2014 Sunday working rumour
Can a sunday be included in the USO. Take for instance Royal Mail wanted to make another week day as an official non working day for what ever reason. That will still maintain the 6 day service and sunday will be classed as any other working normal day of 5 days out of seven. I ask this due to less traffic on the roads to enable the delivery driver to dispose of more items of mail on a sunday, and people being more likely to be at home

Re: 2014 Sunday working rumour
there would need to be a change in the USO via an act of parliment, the USO is for six days a week (Monday to Saturday) delivery of letters for every UK home or premises (five days, Monday to Friday for other postal packets), and it does state the days rather than the number of daysgluteus maximus wrote:Can a sunday be included in the USO. incidently you may think we would deliver more in practice on a sunday, but from experience delivering on saturdays it would in fact be less than on a week day, on a saturday morning no one will get out their beds to answer the door or will shout down to wait, 5 minutes later coming to door, more items brought back on saturday than any other day of the week, its far better getting people in between half 7 and half 9 in the morning monday to friday, they are usually already up getting kids ready for school, also yes less traffic on road, but far more now parked in the roads we want to deliver, the cars that would normally be parked in work car parks are at home in the street blocking where we would normally park so adding more time to deliveries
