I think you'd be more than entitled to have a month or three off with this. Everything is in your favour, and you obviously took a big hit.

Re: Help - injured in RM van accident
Thanks people. Yes, still having trouble moving will go through the DO phone call routine tomorrow and then try and get a left up local GP's and sign on there and hopefully get seen about my severe chest pain and left knee. I will need to go and speak to DOM at some point about what to do next or see the rep.

Re: Help - injured in RM van accident
It's accidents like these, and other accidents with pedestrians being hit by more P&L vans out on the road that makes me wonder if excess vans really are safer than the old way of going out on bikes.

Re: Help - injured in RM van accident
Sorry to read about your trouble. Looking at the photos I am glad to be able to chat to you at all, that was close.
Try to get your reps mobile number and arrange a home visit. You need to give yourself plenty of time to physically recover from your injures. Don't rush back to work only to go off sick again as you will trigger a second stage.
Mentally time will cure the shock of it all. Years back I was a passenger in a rta whereupon the car ended up on its side (my side) in a ditch. It was at night and pretty scary as we smashed and climbed out the side of the car. Took a while to settle it in my mind but its fine now.
Even though your in pain and sore I hope you manage to enjoy your Christmas.

Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Re: Help - injured in RM van accident
Thanks colleague. Much appreciated. At the moment I feel very isolated as no-one's bothered contacting me since the accident and I surely wouldn't be stage 1 as it's an accident at work not a sickie? The rep did take my number on the day I was injured but he still hasn't handed my union form in which was filled a little while back. I'm paranoid that people will be saying I'm milking it because it's Christmas and my injuries are internal and not visible but I can't move easily it takes me 2 minutes to climb the stairs every bloody movement somehow seems connected to my chest muscles and causes severe pain. It was so bad when I woke yesterday I was nearly sick and my eyes were watering. Today it was a few percent less, so merely agony. I have to sleep on my back which is hard for me as I don't usually and sit on a big pile of cushions as getting up from a low chair is just too painful.krussel wrote:Sorry to read about your trouble. As for the mental image I just keep telling myself I wouldn't have been killed whatever and that the safety features did what they were designed to and the driver couldn't have hit the wagon any quicker because he had only just pulled out from the DO and was never going to get fast enough to kill me/us before he hit the wagon. The driver is the only one who's contacted me to enquire about how I am. To everyone else it's probably a joke and to the managers the incident is an inconvenience and I'm just a commodity not a person. The people who say to take my time coming back may forget that in 2 months my second 6-monther come to an end so I must be careful regarding a damages claim or being off too long. I just wish I was at work and it had never happened.

You must do this within six months of your accident or it will not be accepted.

Personal Accident Benefit Scheme
(a) Royal Mail
This is a non contractual discretionary employee benefit provided by Royal Mail. The Scheme is designed to alleviate financial distress where individuals suffer a permanent physical disability as a result of an accident at work. Benefits from the scheme are not dependant on blame, fault or liability. In order to make a claim all accidents must be reported to the employer and recorded in the appropriate accident book (ERICA). Claims must be registered with the PABS Administrators within six months of the date of the accident. This is done automatically by the Legal Department where a member has submitted an LS3 claim form.
In order to establish the extent of any injuries the Scheme uses the medical assessments provided by the Department for Work and Pensions. It is therefore essential that claimants also register their accident with the DWP in line with the process described in claiming Industrial Injuries Benefit. On receipt of the appropriate disability assessment, this should be forwarded to the Legal Department. Claims are settled on the basis of permanent injury. Therefore a life assessment is required, in order to obtain payment. Payments are calculated using the percentage disability against the maximum payment of £40,000.00. For example, a member who is in receipt of a 10% life assessment will receive 10% of £40,000.00, i.e. £4,000.00. Additionally, payments can be made where a member is in receipt of a provisional assessment which extends in excess of a two year period. In such circumstances, a reduced interim payment may be made. Further details concerning the Scheme were published in LTB 198/06 dated 22nd March 2006.

Thanks but probably not appropriate in my case as there is no permanent damage the injuries should heal and I should be back in a few weeks maximum. My claim would be severe pain/distress lack of movement for a few weeks plus shock. I assume I would be paid so wouldn't suffer loss of earnings.

Stress to the doctors that this is a physical job with a lot of walking, and that you need to be a good bit fitter to return.
