A POSTMAN has been given a suspended prison sentence for delaying 2,478 postal packets and stealing post.
Joseph Hegarty, 23, of Sycamore Close, Radcliffe-on-Trent, intentionally delayed post between August 4 and September 9 this year.
He stole 408 postal packets, of an unknown value and belonging to Royal Mail Group Limited, between August 27 and September 9 this year, and two postal packets between August 29 and September 9 this year.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of theft and an offence under the Postal Services Act 2000, in relation to intentionally delaying the post. Magistrates in Nottingham gave him a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, because the offences were so serious. They said he held a high degree of trust, he was employed as a postman, there was a substantial breach of trust and public confidence was undermined. Hegarty is required to do unpaid work for 120 hours over the next 12 months. He will pay £143 compensation, a £80 victim surcharge and £400 costs.

Re: Radcliffe-on-Trent postman sentenced for theft
Apparently in his defense it was suggested that he'd been brain washed into "loving parcels, he just loved them a little too much!"
Union what Union? Do we have a union?
