Royal Mail has been accused of “penny- pinching” after ditching a cut-price stamp scheme for the hard-up, despite posting a surge in profits.
Last Christmas, the postal giant allowed people on certain benefits to buy 36 first and second-class stamps at 2011 prices – 46p and 36p.
It followed the decision to jack up stamp prices to 60p and 50p respectively in April last year.
But Royal Mail confirmed it won’t be giving the same help this time.
Yet the firm is flush after half-year profits surged 150% to £283million.
It follows the company’s controversial privatisation that has left taxpayers out of pocket.
Mirror reader Michael Dorey, 67, from Pudsey, West Yorkshire, fumed: “Scrooge is alive and living at Royal Mail.
"It’s just penny-pinching not to run the scheme this year.”
Royal Mail said: “The price of a first-class letter stamp was unchanged at 60p for 2013 and a second-class letter stamp was unchanged at 50p.
"Therefore, we are not repeating the Christmas stamp scheme which ran last year.”
Royal Mail will join the FTSE 100 list of Britain’s biggest companies later this month, it was revealed yesterday.

Good I'm fed up of this benefits culture of this country. They get rewarded with free dentist treatment, boilers, pet care, housing, money, discounts for virtually everything so why should they get discounts on stamps as well.
This country needs to man up and stop giving everything for nothing.
Some people in my area get given more money than I earn working full time if you take into account all the different benefits they are given.
If you want something go earn the money and get it yourself.

Indeed - it comes to a head in summer when the habitual dole-ites are sitting round in the gardens swigging special brew, not a care in the world, while I'm walking round p*ssing with sweat to pay for the buggers. I don't mind social security, but it's now been allowed to evolve into an alternative lifestyle (if you can call it such) at our expense.

Listen to the Eagles song 'Get Over It', it sums up what you say.
