NUNEATON’S voice in Parliament is pushing post office bosses to find an alternative location for a parcel collection office somewhere in the town.
Marcus Jones, MP, told the News he is aware of the growing anger among the community about the fact that people have to travel to Ibstock Road in Coventry to pick up missed deliveries due to the closure of the town’s sorting office.
He said that he has been in regular contact with Royal Mail bosses to try and find a solution to the problem and says he has been assured that they are investigating finding a suitable location somewhere closer to home.
“They (Royal Mail) have assured me that they are looking at alternative provision for local parcel collection, and I will keep pursuing them to make sure that this happens because I know that many people are experiencing problems with being able to access the temporary collection site in Coventry,” Mr Jones said.
He added: “They have told me that they are looking at arranging parcels either to be left with neighbours or come to an arrangement with local post offices, all of these issues I intend to keep pressing them on.”
As reported in yesterday’s News, asbestos tests carried out at the Church Street-based sorting office have come back negative, but staff are still unable to access the site.
This has caused another headache for residents as post that was due to be delivered on the fateful Friday is still in the sorting office and, until the parcels have been decontaminated, they cannot be delivered.
Angry people have taken to the pages of the Nuneaton News’ Facebook page to vent their frustrations about being unable to get hold of their mail, many of which are Christmas presents.
Some claim that they have attempted to contact Royal Mail headquarters and have been offered no help, or very little information.
Royal Mail bosses have repeatedly apologised about the situation and in a statement a spokesperson said: “We have worked hard to resume a full delivery from the temporary site and will continue to work to ensure we return to Nuneaton as soon as possible.”
Management were forced to close the local sorting office on Friday, November 29 due to concerns about an asbestos outbreak after a vehicle reversing into the internal loading area damaged a small section of ceiling. It was feared that the impact of the smash may have disturbed the ceiling’s asbestos coating, and the site was shut immediately over health and safety concerns.
