Re: Drink driving question....
Lets not forget the guy was driving over the limit, however as a 30 year man his contract will not specify driving though if he has grandfather rights for driving he will lose that. He will most likely be OK and hopefully he will have learned a salutary lesson.

Re: Drink driving question....
I think im gonna lose my job? Got caught drink driving at the weekend, only on 3 month rolling temp contract for a few years now, not a driver though, never been asked to do driving duty, but when I was interviewed I was asked to have a driving licence? Has anyone every been successful in court to not get a ban when saying they need their licence for work? This is my first offence ever!

It's a pretty serious offence, though as to losing your job, what do you normally do? If it doesn't involve driving and you are not normally required to drive you should be OK. If you haven't told your manager then do so without delay and take your rep in with you, far better it comes from you than Chinese whispers.pumpkin2 wrote:I think im gonna lose my job? If I was your DOM, there would be no mitigation which could prove to me that you were capable of following basic rules and I would have no hesitation but to sack you.

Royal Mail has a policy for dealing with this situation.Himaggen wrote:If I was your DOM, there would be no mitigation which could prove to me that you were capable of following basic rules and I would have no hesitation but to sack you.
If you were his Dom you would do as you're told and follow procedure.

If u get a driving charge out of work it would be wrong if you were to get sacked for it unless its a major offence.

Re: Drink driving question....
Sorry, but as the PIC it would be my decision as to whether I deemed an employee under my charge capable of making rational decisions. No responsible DSM would countermand that decision.fishtank wrote:Royal Mail has a policy for dealing with this situation.Himaggen wrote:If I was your DOM, there would be no mitigation which could prove to me that you were capable of following basic rules and I would have no hesitation but to sack you.

Any person who believes that getting behing the wheel of a motor vehicle and pointing it towards others when not in full control is not a major offence is seriously misguided.chrisdouglas wrote:If u get a driving charge out of work it would be wrong if you were to get sacked for it unless its a major offence.

Until it got to an ET,then you and your ego would have to show that you followed all relevant procedures.Himaggen wrote:Sorry, but as the PIC it would be my decision as to whether I deemed an employee under my charge capable of making rational decisions.
They would if it made them look bad and a manager under their command failing to follow proper procedures and costing the business thousands in compensation and legal fees through ignorance, intransigence and ego would definitely make them look bad so they would hang you out to dry I'm afraid. No responsible DSM would countermand that decision.

Re: Drink driving question....
I don't understand this, there are loads of posties who dont have driving licenses and it never put their job at risk. How the hell can someone who loses their license be in danger of losing their job when it simply puts them on the same level as the other non drivers?

Re: Drink driving question....
Could someone please give me a straight answer as to what would happen there, my mind is everywhere with this at the moment, came on there to ask for real advice and not to hear 'what you would do if I was your DOM' crap, you have just made me feel much worse about the whole situation, I know what I did was stupid but its to late to turn back the clock now. Please could your help me out with what the Official Procedure is likely to be? Thank You!fishtank wrote:Royal Mail has a policy for dealing with this situation.Himaggen wrote:If I was your DOM, there would be no mitigation which could prove to me that you were capable of following basic rules and I would have no hesitation but to sack you.

Re: Drink driving question....
Like I said I don't every drive for RM, just always done walking duties, never even been asked to use a van. But my lawyer said if I need a driving licence for my job I could apply for a special reason thing? so I wouldn't get a ban, but this could take a few weeks after my first hearing, so could still have a ban for a few weeks at least.dvbuk55 wrote:It's a pretty serious offence, though as to losing your job, what do you normally do? Re: Drink driving question....
It is very unlikely you will face any conduct charge and if you don't drive for RM currently it shouldn't make any difference to your job.pumpkin2 wrote:Could someone please give me a straight answer as to what would happen there, my mind is everywhere with this at the moment
I wouldn't lie to the courts about needing your license for work though, they will contact RM and dishonesty will get you the sack.

Re: Drink driving question....
You don't drive for RM, so no problem. Had a fellow postie done for drink driving, he was just put on walking and cycling duties. As long as you can get to work I would not be worried.

Re: Drink driving question....
As fishtank says, especially given that you are not an employed driver, it is unlikely.fishtank wrote:It is very unlikely you will face any conduct charge and if you don't drive for RM currently it shouldn't make any difference to your job.pumpkin2 wrote:Could someone please give me a straight answer as to what would happen there, my mind is everywhere with this at the moment

You need to understand however that unlikely does not get you out of the woods. Being named publicly as an employee of Royal Mail who has committed a crime you could theoretically be conducted for simply bringing the Company into disrepute. Additionally as I stated earlier, everybody knows that it is against the law to drive under the influence, therefore it follows that if you cannot follow the law of the land, it is not unreasonable that your Employer has no faith in your ability to follow their rules either.
