I take my car out, do my loops (not from the car before you scream!) and go straight home, dropping my PDA and returns off with the van driver.bustedflush wrote:I agree. These spiteful little 'work-to-rulers' do themselves NO favours. I go in half-hour early, as I'm part time and still the full-timer/driver will be waiting for me to bundle up and get on out. I never doorstep/run/jog/leave gates open. I simply walk briskly. I've twice worked to my time in months. Now before the Red Robbos kick-off at me, I took this job as it fitted in with my personal life. I could, working the hours, finish in time to pick my kids up from school. The earlier I get out, the earlier I go home. I'd say half the blokes in the office think the same way. I want my break at home after work, not sitting in the canteen drinking overpriced crappy coffee for 20 minutes.weary_posty wrote:I regard myself as quite a quick postman, I start at 6.30 and usually am one of the first back.
I'm only 25 and work in an office with the majority aging from 40-78. I understand I will be a lot quicker walking (although it's at a quicker pace) than a lot of the guys and girls in the office.
Why should I slow down? Yes there could be frustration at the time I finish but with the way the company solely runs on seniority us young noobys need a perk somewhere.
If I'm put on with a really slow prat (there are 4 or 5 in the office) I take my car out, do my loops (not from the car before you scream!) and go straight home, dropping my PDA and returns off with the van driver. The slow ones actually are aware many posties either refuse to work with them as a pair, or insist they take their own van out. To be fair, they tell the newbs to take their car out if they want. We have had one person reported delivering after 5PM. and on occasions between 7 and 8 PM. Who wants to be paired with a dosser like that?
Says it all really. Try going back to the office yourself with your PDA and returns if you're doing nothing wrong. One day in the near future you'll have to work until your official finishing time, could already be monitoring what time you log off. Good to see you have capacity for a couple more loops

Each is part of your job, so yes there should be standards for all of them. It's hardly rocket science is it?Lincox wrote:On a Flyer you may be on IPS. There are different functions to our roles and some are quick on IPS, some are quick on throwing in, some are quick at bagging up, some are quick on delivery. Are you saying that you want each function to have a mandated performance standard, because believe you me mate, you are going to fall foul on one or maybe two or three of these functions.
It makes me laugh whenever any kind of performance standards are mentioned on here there is uproar, it's called work for a reason and we all get paid the same for a reason.
There's no reason for anyone to be slow on IPS who has been doing it for years. Most of the mail is sequenced so there's no reason to be slow putting it in. Tying up, wow that's a branteaser!
I'd be happy to be tested on any aspect of my job. My partner and I cut off whenever its busy and never get questioned because the manager knows our work rate is good.

It's not really standards that are the problem though flyer, most people can meet the standards when they get tested. The problem really is people who slack off, play with their phone, talk to their mates,go for a pointless wander or just switch off and sort on autopilot.Since management do nothing to stop blatant "timewasting" they are hardly going to be arsed constantly timing people to measure standards.OnAFlyer wrote:Each is part of your job, so yes there should be standards for all of them. You can't even share out work evenly because no two boxes in the whole of Royal Mail contain the same amount of work.Better management is what we really need not arbitrary standards but don't hold your breath for that one.

Re: The one thing I hope is in new deal.
There are issues from all sides. The ' runners ' are carving the job up because they physically can and claim ignorance when you tell them what the consequences will be. Part timers are desperate in the most part to earn more money and will do what they can to earn more or keep on the managers side because they are worried about the renewal of their contract, whereas most full timers would not. The old guard are of the belief that they are owed an easier duty because of their length of service and many are convinced that they are working to their full capacity when they are clearly not. These practices and others are rife in the delivery workplace and will and can never be addressed because it has gone on for far too long and many benefit Royal Mail. If any are tackled then i will be surprised. The " i'm alright Jack " mentality is what has f****d the job and Moya knows it. The Reps job is only going to get harder ....

Re: The one thing I hope is in new deal.
Thanks for a considered and sensible reply. You got it in a nutshell. Because I am on (and several others) a 6-month renewable contract, I cannot ever envisage talking to managers like the 'established' posties do, for example telling them they'll cut-off on busy days or not take lapsing out etc. Yes, there are old-timers who take it easy as you say, and they are a big contrast to the new and keen posties who (like me) believe speed and completing the walk early or on-time are of the essence. Having said that, I'd say a majority of the established posties are quite quick and do encourage speed. The conflict only arises when we are paired with certain 'slow' people. All the office are aware who these are, and try and keep them together as the managers are aware many people will insist on not working with them or if they do taking another van or their personal car out. This I suppose keeps their costs down, as less o/t will be claimed, and a couple of the slow ones don't get paid for going over as the managers know that everyone else can finish the round within time. I do accept the point that I am (unwittingly) contributing to the managers' arguments by working quick but again I want the job, I like it generally and don't want issues when my 6-months are up. At my office no reliable 6-monther has ever been ousted and in practice they keep going probably due to the chronic under-manning there always seems to be.toonslayer7 wrote:There are issues from all sides. Union membership from what I gather is about 50% in my office, and even many of those were stating they were not going to strike after the recent ballot for Monday 4/11. Having come from another industry after 10 years the pay-deal on offer was/is quite good compared to outside RM, and my missus (and a few other posties' partners) have said they'd snap at the hand with that offer in. I know there's other issues apart from pay, but I can say with some certainty most long-time posties are detached from how bad things are outside at the moment and need some perspective. I suppose my region (being in a very non-red part of the political map) doesn't have quite the same union dedication than say the urban offices do. When there was an ad-hoc meeting one morning before the strike for 4/11 was announced, out of about 80 people in the office, there was no more than a dozen with the rep outside to listen.

Re: The one thing I hope is in new deal.
Have you stopped to wonder why a highly unionised industry gets a pay offer that those in non-unionised private sector jobs would "snap" at? It's not long term posties that need some perspective,we're doing quite well with the perspective we have and have little intention of letting the worst aspects of private industry ruin our working lives.bustedflush wrote: Having come from another industry after 10 years the pay-deal on offer was/is quite good compared to outside RM, and my missus (and a few other posties' partners) have said they'd snap at the hand with that offer in.
We will continue to fight the "work yourself into an early grave,be grateful for what you have, accept anything as long as you keep your job mentality" as long as we can and you can either join us and strengthen that fight or capitulate and weaken it,It's your call.

What don't you understand! If you finish early RM should give you more work so that you work to your time!! So the hard/faster you work the bigger your duty should get! The people doing the job properly are saving jobs for the future. Remember you will one day be the guy over 50 who perhaps can't go as fast as he used to. For god sake think before you continue theses actions. If RM wanted to take your break off you and force you to use your own fuel you would be soon saying how union has done you over blah blah blahbustedflush wrote:I agree. Re: The one thing I hope is in new deal.
In the CWU blueprint of the future of deliveries 2013 it mentions clocking in machines, so I don't believe the CWU don't want it but they risk all the runners saying the union sold them out for making them work their hours. Conference this year could see a change coming in clocking in machines. I would support the use of clocking in machine which would protect jobs going forward.

People who come in early are nuts ,who in their right mind would work for nothing.
The union ie us have fought for years to get better terms and conditions only for these people to try and ruin them crazy or what.

If people would remember that the delivery is not finished until PDA and all 739 items are returned to DO. We regularly have drivers bringing back PDAs for 5 or 6 other duties - so that the other posties don't have to return to depot.

Re: The one thing I hope is in new deal.
That's my whole point - you don't 'do it for nothing' as I can save that half-hour off of the end by finishing early. IF I had to come in early AND work until time because the workload was too much for my hours, then that would be a different matter as you say.mailman71 wrote:People who come in early are nuts ,who in their right mind would work for nothing.
