Simple, don't work overtime unless you really need to. When asked, request you do the appropriate walk as you are the floater. Let the management choose. In fairness the chap who usually does the round I did last week when he was off is doing OT this week and working another round, the reserves are still on his. Depends on the office or is this a national situation?mlw wrote:totally unfairness againwhy did the union agree this?knoxycube wrote:Our office has a local agreement where the duty holder remains on his walk on his day off and the floater gets moved. Re: changing walk every day
i asked the manager why i always have to change and he says because i am good at all the walks and others are not, so when they work day off he basically does not trust these guys to change! I SAID IT IS UNFAIR AND HE WILL LOOK AT TRAINING THEM UP IN NEW YEAR funny that he said same last year, so now at christmas these guys are working there days off and once again i have 2 change to do parcel deliverys!bustedflush wrote:Simple, don't work overtime unless you really need to. Re: changing walk every day
I have said a few times here that there should be a Special Reserve Allowance for people that are Reserves or made to work as Reserves. The is something that the CWU and the old timers brigade supports because it is essentially in the favour - no need to be flexible or they get away with it - even rewarded with doing their own (easy) walks.
With P&L and shared vans, the training is minimal. The most annoying thing of all is that they are the same people that do IPS and will turn round and tell you that all walks are the same and they did that walk or that walk many years ago...
After our Revision, people (usually part-timers) are often moved from their walks to cover an absence where it is claimed some people are not trained.
We have had 5 new starters in the last year and only one of them has been used in a separate section of the office. The part-timer reserves on 27 hours are rarely trained to do new rounds. The manager says it is not necessary but when a long-term staff needs to do OT, then they are not trained.
* Our manager sometimes cannot (maybe genuinely or otherwise) tell the difference between a Floater (signed duty) and a Reserve because we now have FT long-term reserves that seems to dictate which walk they want to work or not and both groups are more generally more flexible and efficient than others.

Am assuming that this is a piss take.bustedflush wrote:I know how you feel but for a slightly different reason. I have been a reserve for a year since joining RM. I have never done the same walk for more than 2 weeks on the trot. We recently had several new jobs move to the office which are 'dollies'. I and another reserve did one for the first week it was in, blind. It went well. The stress of being changed every week is becoming intolerable, it's like starting a new job every Monday! It's compounded by the fact that 2 reserves who have been there 4 months less than me have been kept on 2 of the new jobs for 9, yes NINE! consecutive weeks, nice and stress-free. I am supposed according to the manager 'to cover 5 or 6 jobs' and so far have learnt 12. I complained and when I asked why I kept being moved was told 'because you can do it'. What crap. I finished today Wednesday at 13.15 and couldn't go back to the office until 2 because recently when I finished at 12.00 on a Saturday the b******s tried to send me out again! Punished for being quick! Fortunately the driver had gone home and I refused to deliver extra from my car.
Sorry if I sound naïve here but I am relatively new to RM and haven't learned all the correct 'tricks' yet.
Punished for being quick? No mate ; you are expected to work your hours. Is that a problem?
Glad you refused to use your car.
The life of being a reserve is never fun... But if you want overtime then at least you know the walks.

Re: changing walk every day
Are you sure being non-union was really an issue?.. If so, that is worrying! There should either be an agreement for all or non - there should be no discrimination for Union members or otherwise. I doubt the Union could have helped anyway.
At least, he had another walk to sign for.
It always amazes me that some folks here are quick to lamp-bast their managers when in actual fact, a lot of managers are probably old school and they believe and uphold Seniority to the detriments of some of the staff in their offices.
This is an issue for the manager especially and then the Union who is also complicit in discriminatory practices amongst members; and also non-members.
Its the same old same old - even those involves in negotiations are not willing to address discrimination and tackle the more inflexible and inefficient members that are holding the company back.

Re: changing walk every day
As these guys are coming in on o/t then there's no issues your due to do a walk on a day they should not be there it's them that have to do the other duty not you. you do not have to change your due delivery walk. I'm afraid your dom is an ass
you must go above your unit rep as he obviously is the doms arse wipe it's your right to do the duty , Have seen guys with the same problem over and over , to be resolved by the floater agreeing to change but he had the option to stay on his due delivery job , some stuck to there guns and those who thought they had the right to displace the floater went home in a huff

Re: changing walk every day
No, not a piss-take. If a round should take 'x' time and I can do it in 'y' time (quicker) then why should I be expected to do extra walking because I finished before time? This is counter productive as it just encourages sloth and heel-dragging. I take the point about knowledge and overtime though, and I refused to use my car as it's against the rules and my insurance wouldn't cover it.hampshireman wrote:Am assuming that this is a piss take.bustedflush wrote:I know how you feel but for a slightly different reason. Re: changing walk every day
As long as you come in at the right time and do not cut corners... However, this is a job where RM wants the employees to work all the hours they are paid - meaning you should ideally return to the office and sign out at your finish time.
What you choose to do with the extra time you gain is up to you but in most jobs you are not allowed to go until your finish time.
Delivery is sort of unique in the sense that even though we are supposed to work all the hours, there are times when RM needs it staff to do OT. However, there is very little slack, casuals are rarely used and the start times are much later than previously; so they are forced to turn a blind eye to early finishers.
Previously, early finishers or people on easier walks is something that some people moan about but we all just get on with it because it was a way of life but P&L and B&H, RM wanting delivery staff to do more, Performance testing has made this a real problem.
* Job and finish is the root of the problem and the fact that some took on the job because of the early finish - by that I mean historically they expect to be home by a certain time: that probably used to be 11.30am or 12pm for some that started way back.
