Royal Mail Fails To Meet Delivery Targets

The newly-privatised Royal Mail is told to meet its obligations to customers ahead of its crucial Christmas delivery period.

Royal Mail has been warned it faces an investigation and possible fines if it does not improve services after missing key performance targets.

The postal regulator Ofcom said the recently-privatised company missed a requirement to deliver 93% of all first class letters on the day after collection, reaching 91.7%.

Ofcom said Royal Mail was also required to meet a target of 91.5% of next-day delivery for first class post in almost all of the UK's geographic postcode areas to provide a good level of service across the UK, and not just in more densely populated areas.

But Royal Mail achieved this level in only 62% of the required postcode areas in the year to March 2013.

Royal Mail met other targets, including a requirement to deliver 98.5% of second class letters within three days of collection.

It either exceeded or narrowly missed targets relating to areas such as special delivery, parcels and delivery to the correct address.

"Ofcom is concerned about Royal Mail's failure to meet certain service targets, and has made clear to the company that it must take all necessary steps to meet these in future," the regulator said.

Its report on the postal sector noted that Royal Mail was now on a firmer financial footing and productivity was gradually improving though competition in delivery from other operators still accounted for less than 1% of UK mail volumes.

Royal Mail said in a statement: "We were disappointed that we didn't meet all of the regulatory quality-of-service targets we were required to last year. This remains a key area of focus for us.

"Royal Mail has the highest service specification of any major European country and we take our service performance very seriously.

"The quality of our service to customers is key to our success."

Ofcom noted that customer satisfaction with Royal Mail was high though only just over half of the consumers surveyed were satisfied with the cost of postage, with 30% dissatisfied.

Business users, who account for around 90% of all mail sent, were also largely happy with Royal Mail's service with just 7% dissatisfied.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

How long before the newly privatised company tell offcom to stick their license where the sun don't shine and just deliver parcels if they don't like it? :hmmmm

Probably more like 61% if our delivery office is anything to go by. Trying to get into apartment blocks in the middle of the afternoon is crazy. The amount of 'No Access' mail returned to our office is insane. Under the old way of working early you could get in easily as most of the service/trade buttons were still on! :arrrghhh

This isnt surprising. i dont know what its like in all areas but in ours there is NO missort run now. great way to save money. There are more people off sick than ever at our office and apparently royal mail decided there should be no positions to cover sick leave. which means walks are failing just a couple of many things royal mail are doing to save money and boost profits. since i worked for RM the first 4 1/2 years we never failed the #USO. now its a daily happening. just sad.

Quite a while I expect since there is no licence and RM cannot unilaterally walk away from the USO

nothing new really walks being lapsed all the time following too many cutbacks on walks not enough staff and too big a rounds the only way to solve this is reduce the size of rounds and employ more staff but now we are privatised this wont happen as profits come before service too little too late more staff off sick due to pressure and stress sad to say but it can only get worse more part time staff and zero hour contracts to follow in the future look forward to retirement leaving all this behind feel sorry for my colleagues on deliveries and joe public who dont know half the truth about how royal mail is run . :cry

in my town we have three delivery offices, east west and central, our mail is processed 30 miles away. the amount of mail we get for east and west at the central office is insane, if its got no postcode they just tray it up to go to central,
sorters in a town 30 miles away really have no idea of roads and areas in my town. the missort boxes at IPS are overflowing every morning, it must be a problem replayed all over the country. but hey who are we to question management policy?

This is superb news and the timing is awesome.

If this does not focus RM's view on delivery with the union then nothing else will.

Expect a very, very big - re hashed version of WCM coming soon as well.... :cuppa

This would explain why my office is constantly being moaned at about quality targets.

Maybe if the company hadn't closed so many MC's, this might not be as big an issue as it apparently is.
