Police today issued an urgent appeal to trace a missing York postman who may have been the victim of an accident after telling colleagues he was knocking off work early due to illness.
Daniel Jarvis, 30, whose family home is in Burlington Avenue, has not been seen or heard from since he left the Royal Mail Sorting Office on Leeman Road at 9.40am on Friday.
He had been feeling unwell and told colleagues that he was intending to travel home to the Melrosegate area on the number six First York bus.
The last known sighting was on CCTV as he walked over Lendal Bridge towards the city centre ten minutes later.
He lives with his parents who reported him missing on Friday evening when he failed to turn up. Police say Daniel’s disappearance is out of character and there are fears that he has taken ill.
An extensive search throughout the night is continuing today. Officers are examining the route he would normally take to get home and checks are being made at local betting shops as it is known he has a keen interest in horse racing.
Members of the public are asked to keep an eye out for Daniel and report any sighting of a man matching his description since 9.40am on Friday.
He is white, brown haired, 5ft 11in tall, and slim. When he was wearing a Royal Mail red fleece jacket and a blue woollen hat with a white band around it.
Insp Lee Pointon, of the York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Daniel’s family are naturally very distressed by his disappearance which is totally out of character for him.
“We know that he left work early on Friday morning as he was feeling unwell, and this further heightens our concern for his safety.
“To help the missing person investigation, we are also urging people to come forward with possible sightings of Daniel. Do you recall seeing a man in a red Royal Mail fleece jacket and wearing a blue woollen hat with a white band around it?
“Evening the smallest piece of information could be very important in our effort to find Daniel, so please do not hesitate to get ion touch. “ In an appeal to Daniel himself, he added: “Daniel, your family are extremely worried about you and they need to know that you are safe and well.
“If you see or hear this appeal, please get in touch with them as soon as possible or let the police know that you have not come to harm.”
Anyone with information should call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room. Quote “ York missing person – Daniel Jarvis” when passing on information.

A FAMILY’S nightmare ended when a missing York postman, who vanished over the weekend sparking a massive search operation, turned up safe and well.
Police had scoured the city for Daniel Jarvis, 30, of Burlington Avenue, York, who left work early at the Royal Mail sorting office, in Leeman Road, at about 9.40am on Friday, telling colleagues he felt unwell and was going home by bus.
He had not been seen since he was seen on CCTV crossing Lendal Bridge towards the city centre at 9.50am despite a major search including checks along the Ouse and Foss involving the North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue boat.
The postman lives with his parents, Colleen Jarvis and Andrew Croft, and brother Adam, who reported him missing on Friday evening.
Daniel’s sister, Fay Jarvis, had provided police with a favourite photograph of her brother with her son, Finnley, aged five, and his parents made an emotional appeal for him to come home.
Daniel was reunited with his family on Sunday afternoon after turning up at his home.
His aunt, Diane Jarvis, thanked The Press for publicising the appeals online over the weekend, adding: “I can’t tell you how relieved everyone is.”
Inspector Lee Pointon said: “We thank the media and the thousands of people on Facebook and Twitter who supported our efforts to locate Daniel.
"It has been an intensive couple of days for the police teams involved and naturally very distressing for the family. The important thing is that Daniel is back home safe, which is great news for all concerned.”

Now that he's home safe and well...
Do you think Royal Mail will dock his sick pay for not being at his home address for two days?
