Stop the new Royal Mail rules violating our human rights to privacy

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/266/937/ ... o-privacy/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In 2013 Royal Mail introduced a new rule whereby post office counter clerks are to ask senders what the contents of their parcel are. Refusal to divulge the information will result in you being turned away, parcel in tow. Being asked 'what's in it?' Is a violation of our human rights to privacy!! What if the contents are sensitive in nature? I have complained about this issue to Royal Mail, and the majority of my questions/issues/points were dismissed. I escalated the complaint and even got a thrid path to review the complaint, however as you can probably guess they sided with Royal Mail (still with no answers for me).

I got given mixed answers, both contradictory and irrelevant. The advisors used the words 'safety and security' as though those two reasons justify violating human rights to privacy. They do not!

i gave an alternative solution to the issue, but this was ignored.

I was was told (in a round about way) that us, the public, aren't capable to following the guidelines as they are and so extra measures have been put in place to make sure parcels are being posted correctly.

forcing us to divulge the contents, and/or information we may not wish to divulge and punishing us (refusal to send parcels) if we don't 'give up' the information is atrocious!

We have human rights. We are entitled to privacy. Don't let Royal Mail or anyone take that away!

Err, i'm sure there are certain amendments that allow parcel carriers (not just Royal Mail) to have some degree of information about the contents of a parcel should they require it. For example if a carrier has a policy of not handling glassware, they may ask whether the contents contain glass and refuse to handle the item if it does. They may also need to know if it contains any aerosols or anything which could potentially be explosive or flammable.

Secondly i'm sure if you send anything through international mail, regardless of the carrier, the customs officials at the receiving end require a proforma document stating the contents and value of the goods. Otherwise the item will likely be sent back or destroyed. Granted, this only applies to international mail.

And the man in the article is not being 'punished' - what a ridiculous thing to say. What makes him think that the company has to serve him? Surely companies are permitted to refuse their services at their own discretion.

All companies basically have the right to refuse service to any customer they want.
Many will have a sign up stating this fact.
No company can be forced to serve any customer.
So, if you want to use the service/buy the product, you have to follow the rules.
(Obviously, there are rules regarding discrimination etc. that can't be infringed).
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

Of course, deliver the parcel yourself if you're so concerned about 'privacy'

My sister was asked at the PO counter what was in her A5 letter, she was Posting to Ba post code area (a gift card) next day Saturday, it was cashed in Solihull,
I would suggest lieing to the counter staff when they ask
There is a forgotten, well almost a forbidden word, which means more to me than any other.

That word is ENGLAND!!!

Surely she should have been asked about the value or whether cash was enclosed so that the appropriate Special Delivery service could be used.

Never ever been asked what I'm sending ever. Obviously if your sending something of value it could be in your own interest so the appropriate service can be suggested. Also some items are not permitted to be sent via RM.

i gave an alternative solution to the issue, but this was ignored.

Perhaps the original complainant is unaware that mail may be carried by air on passenger flights even within the UK and as such is liable to air transport regulations. would he/she be happy to fly in an aircraft where there are goods in the mail on board which could endanger the aircraft?

Indeed. You can't take a tin of paint on a bus and of course things are stricter in the air.

When was the last time an aircraft was brought down due to the contents of the mail items it was transporting ?

This customer was upset by the questioning because of the ham fisted and jack boot manner in which the Post Office have handled the introduction of complying with the dangerous goods act, Pol have put the fear of God into the average Counter person. We all have a laminated template, all you have to do is ask the customer if their package contains any of the items shown on the template, if they say no then there is no need to to ask any further questions about the contents.

The Stores ordering code for "common sense" is P7301.

Oh and in case the w****r at POL who thinks we Postmasters are going to text you to tell you have have completed Dangerous Goods compliance testing either buy us all a mobile phone or :vcfo

Whilst taking your point on the ham fisted approach of the POL policy. Lithium batteries are especially hazardous.

UPS Airlines Flight 6 crashed on On September 3, 2010, after a fire in a cargo container holding them, albeit they were "thousands" but lithium battery fires are quite common, I have lost one mobile phone as a result of its battery catching fire.
