Local MP fights to keep Feltham Royal Mail Delivery Office open

Feltham and Heston MP Seema Malhotra has called on Business Secretary and Liberal Democrat Vince Cable to confirm that the local Feltham delivery office will not be sold off after privatisation.

Last week in the House of Commons Ms Malhotra asked Vince Cable what the Government was doing to prevent any sell-off and move out-of-town of the local delivery office following privatisation of Royal Mail earlier this month. Mr Cable could not confirm that it would stay in Feltham, only saying that any sale was ‘wildly improbable’.

On Friday Ms Malhotra met with Post Office workers and campaigners outside the delivery office, many of whom were greatly concerned about Royal Mail privatisation, the threat to their local delivery office, and threat to post offices which provide such a vital service in the local community for families and businesses

Seema Malhotra MP said: “Local businesses and families rely on the Feltham delivery office everyday to pick up parcels and important letters, and if it was sold-off and moved out-of-town this would be disastrous for Hounslow businesses and local jobs. Whilst Vince Cable says it is likely to stay, he has broken too many promises before on things like tuition fees to be trusted, and we need real confirmation that our delivery office is not under threat.”

Royal Mail operates from around 2,000 sites including 48 mail centres. Approximately half are owned by Royal Mail Estates and in many cases are in areas of prime central real estate, and could now be sold-off and moved to out-of-town industrial parks following privatisation.

It's not up to Cable is it?
It will be RM's choice.
A choice that will be made for purely financial reasons, and everything else not taken into account.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

It makes business sense to amalgamate DOs where possible, but its not good for the locals who have to travel further for their 739 items. Think alot of smaller offices will end up being moved together in the comming years, especially as we now have the vans.
