Robbing from the surcharges.
A Royal Mail postal worker wrecked his 13-year career and brought misery on his family all for the sake of £10, magistrates in Manchester heard.
Karl Lee, 55, was caught on a hidden camera twice dipping into a tin and stealing the cash.
Royal Mail prosecutor Richard Black said investigators were brought in after it was revealed that £500 had gone missing from the office.
A covert camera was set up and Lee was also trapped opening a package – but nothing was stolen. “It is not suggested that Lee was to blame for the theft of the £500,” stressed Mr Black.
Lee, of Partington Lane, Swinton, admitted two counts of theft while employed at the North West Delivery Office in Swinton and delaying the mail.
He was given a six month community order to attend a new directions activity requirement plus £250 court costs and £60 surcharge.
He has also lost his job as a result.
The offences took place on August 14 and 15 and court chairman Jean Fisk told Lee: “This was a serious breach of trust and will have dire consequences for you.”
It was said the tin had been used to deposit Customs and Surcharge monies.
Patrick Regan, defending, said the offences had had a profound effect on Lee.
He claimed it had been very hot in the office and he didn’t have any change to buy drinks on the way home.
Mr Regan claimed: “It seems there were other staff dipping into the tin on a day-to-day basis to buy cigarettes and drinks.
“It was a widespread practice which the Royal Mail has not acknowledged.”
Mr Regan said Lee, now on benefits, was ‘acutely embarrassed for the misery he had brought on his family’.
“He has had to borrow cash from his in-laws to pay the mortgage so he can keep his house,” he added.

If you needed a coffee that badly
Can't believe they expected that excuse to hold.
Plus, why risk a decent job for 40 or 50p? Utter bullshit.
