Former Bute postman given community sentence

A former Rothesay postal worker who admitted stealing 1,656 door-to-door postal packets and intentionally delaying or opening 21 postal packets in the course of his duties was handed a community-based sentence at the town’s sheriff court on Monday.
Martin Kane (32), who had pleaded guilty to two charges at a hearing on October 7, was given six months to complete 240 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community payback order.
Kane, now living at 37 Colinslea Drive, Paisley, had failed to deliver the door-to-door postal packages - the legal term for items such as advertising material and other items not addressed to specific people, which outside customers pay the Royal Mail to deliver to every household - between June 2010 and June 2013, and had intentionally delayed or opened the 21 individually-addressed and undelivered items between February 2010 and June 2013.
Both offences were committed at Rothesay delivery office, Kane’s then home address in Rothesay and elsewhere in the town.
Fiscal depute Lindy Scaife said Royal Mail had launched an investigation after becoming concerned at not receiving any paperwork for surcharges or customs charges from the Rothesay office, and that the 21 opened or delayed items included letters, greetings cards and hospital appointments.
The court was told Kane had struggled to cope with the workload after being given supervisory status following the retiral of the Rothesay delivery office’s manager, and that while he told his new line manager of his concerns, nothing had been done.
Colin Williamson, defending, said that Kane had effectively been asked to do the same job as his previous manager in substantially less time.
Mr Williamson, who acknowledged that the charge relating to the 21 postal packets was more serious, said his client had been “interested to know what sort of items had not been delivered”.
“When the investigation team came to Rothesay he told them exactly what had been going on,” Mr Williamson continued. “He co-operated fully, took the investigators to his home and pled guilty at the first opportunity.”
Mr Williamson told the court Kane, who had resigned before being dismissed, was now awaiting a start date for a new job as a storeman at Faslane.
Sheriff Ruth Anderson told Kane: “For an offence of this nature, custody has to be uppermost in my mind. However, given the particular circumstances, I will impose a community payback order in which you will carry out the maximum number of hours of unpaid work.”

STOLE..... D2D, POSTAL and PACKAGES. All in one sentence.
They were leaflets and he couldn't be arsed to deliver them. Yes he should be sacked but at least keep the exaggerating down.
Gotta love the press.
(Yes I did read about the 21 real packages but check the actual headline).

Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

On a side note, is it usual for the Sottish press to print the FULL address of people convicted in court ?Kane, now living at 37 Colinslea Drive, Paisley,
It's not something I've seen down my way

Maybe the idea behind that is so that his address can be bombarded with excess D2D and an assortment of junk mail.
