As you've said you are willing to work overtime, make sure you tell the manager that you expect to be paid for it. Some managers conveniently 'forget' to book it, and as a new start you may be considered a prime candidate for exploitation by an unscrupulous carpet bagger wearing a 'Manager' high viz vest.

So they and the big bosses get their money you have earned for them, Don't work over your contracted hours easier said than done if you are new!.star2010 wrote:wiganpostie wrote:As you've said you are willing to work overtime, make sure you tell the manager that you expect to be paid for it. Managers' bonuses are dependant to an extent on keeping the office budget as low as possible, so if they don't pay you for the overtime you've worked, it makes the figures look good and they get a nice wedge in their pocket.
The procedure for booking overtime can vary from office to office, but usually it involves you asking the manager for the overtime docket and you book what you've worked. It's then down to the DOM to authorise it so you get paid, but that can be in the lap of the gods if you've got a DOM who's a bit of a c**t.

First few months are the worst, nobody seems to want to help, managers take the mick, put on different rounds every day. In time you do get quicker and obviously begin to know more about the job etc
Thanks irongullet. why does nobody want to help? in what way will they take the mick? going on different rounds cant be a bad thing, more i know the better i say.
good luck,

Re: new job
i started over a year ago and got put on a permanent contract after 6 months i was with an experienced postie for 3 days training on the round then was left on that round for 4 months before going as a reserve doing a different round as needed in my office we agree the overtime with any of the managers and have to make sure we sign the overtine sheet or we dont get it paid. im on a 25 hour contract but was asked on the first day to do 28 hrs which i have to sign for overtime everyweek and from january ive been asked to go on a 30 hr contract but dont be afraid to say no to overtime they will always ask again. good luck
