However, a strike by the Royal Mail does not necessarily mean an upturn in trade for alternative postal delivery companies.
Guy Buswell is chief executive officer of Birmingham-based Business Post Group, which also runs UK Mail - this branch of the company delivers 6m-8m items of mail per day.
However, the final delivery is carried out by the Royal Mail, which is sub-contracted by Business Post.
Increased costs
Mr Buswell believes that "no-one benefits" from a postal strike.
"99% of all mail is delivered by the Royal Mail, so if they strike, 99% of all mail is not delivered.
"Couriers are not designed to deliver mass mail. If you give a courier 100 addresses to get round in a day, then he won't have time.
"Also, delivery will cost 20 or 30 times what it would if you were using the Royal Mail.
"Some companies will often get swamped with inquiries but will only deal with existing customers, not new ones, because they don't have the ability to cope with the increased demand.
"In the long term, mail gets a bad name."

The same bloke said on Radio 4 last week that there was NO prospect of any rival setting up an alternative delivery network to rival Royal Mail's for the foreseeable future. Boss of UK mail, he says "No way"...
E-mail Post Worker to get regular news reports and leaflets. Order copies of the posties paper at 20p per copy, £10 for 50, £15 for 100, £20 for 200 or more, plus postage. Ask your Branch to order copies in bulk for your members and activists.

All this crap we have been fed about the competitors taking all our business when anyone can see we STILL DELIVER IT ALL, just for bugger all now. Thanks Leighton and Crozier.

dont be conned my dear competitors, downstream access prices were so cheap to make sure that you greedy lot jumped on the gravy train. how else could crozier and leighton go running to the govt crying that the po was bankrupt, and use the govt to break the cwu on the illusion that without modernisation, the company would go to the wall.rather than renegotiate downsteam access rm board and hm govt, have hatched the plan to try and destroy the cwu, make 40,000 redundant, change the pensions and when all this is done, they will have a slimmed down underpaid flexible workforce.the ideal recipe for privatisation. and let us guess who can afford to buy shares in a privatised rm. certainly u lot on the downsream gravy train, leighton crozier and his big city cronies.clever eh? sell downsream access on the cheap, then run to the govt blaming the loss of mail and revenue on the reason why the company has to modernise, and destroying the cwu would make the plan easy. with the govt in leightons back pocket how could this fail? simple my dear old money grabbers, the cwu is going nowwhere. my colleagues are rock solid. gordon brown, the plan is a failure phone your appointees at royal mail and instruct them to do a deal forthwith, then gordon tell them to get back and negotiate a decent price for downsream access, one that gaurantees the universal service, job done, remember gordon, this is a labour government. and as such should conduct itself with values and honesty ,and in the interests of the people, this is a public service, somethings in life are not just about profit and more money, time for you to show some integrity.

simple my friend, the pension makes the company bankrupt ,hence the pension proposals to reduce the deficits making it more attractive to private stakeholders, namely the downstream access fat cats who are getting there mail delivered by us on the cheap.gathering themselves a big pot of money ready to reinvest . great isnt it they cant lose, it was our work, then it was opened up to the very people who are eventually going to share the ownership, insider dealing or what, scandle
