Royal Mail strike: Peace talks to avert pre-Christmas action due to resume
http://www.mirror.co.uk/money/city-news ... ks-2643091" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Talks aimed at averting a pre-Christmas strike at Royal Mail will resume on Monday.
Tens of thousands of Royal Mail workers are poised to strike on November 4 over pay, pensions and job security.
Peace talks between the two sides began last week and are due to continue tomorrow, said the Communication Workers’ Union, which has called the 24 hour stoppage.
The walkout by posties, delivery drivers and sorting office staff - the first national stoppage at Royal Mail since 2009 - could hit deliveries in the run up to Christmas if no deal is reached.
It comes amid claims the newly privatised business was flogged off at a knockdown price.
Business Secretary Vince Cable - who is facing union calls to resign over the botched sell off - is due to be quizzed by MPs next month to explain why Royal Mail was so chronically under valued by the Government.

Never mind peace talks, to avert pre- Christmas strikes, that's all RM are worried about clearly. It's talks to settle the new agreement they should be having, & only when we are satisfied with what is offered, & only then, should strike action be holted, otherwise going out on strike on the 4th for 24hrs is meaningless.

CWU better not show the same cowardice as that shown by Unite with regard to their members over the Grangemouth business.

Yup my thoughts exactly. My guess is that these talks are just to decide how long the CWU will put off strike action for this time to let the bosses off the hook. Expect confirmation any day now saying no strikes till March as a gesture of good will between the CWU and the RM.... closely followed by a lorry load of pies being delivered to the CWU HQ!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

If Billy and dave called the strikes off like last time, and we all went back in with our tails between our legs, could there be a vote of no confidence by cwu members to topple billy and dave?
Surely they wouldnt bottle it and call off the strikes again like they did a few years back.

Re: Peace talks to avert pre-Christmas action due to resume
Look there is a big difference between 2009 and now. In 2009 some of us had been out on 20 days of strike action and some had been out 2 days. The period of calm allowed negotiations on the overall agreement which took close on 4 months to negotiate . What were we meant to do strike for another 4 months which would not have resolved anything as talks were already agreed.
Now today there is no deal and none likely at this moment. The strike next week will be notified and the strike will go ahead. There have been lots of negotiations and with both Royal mails and the CWU lawyers in the room as the legal binding stuff will be written by them.
If people don't want to join the strike just say so stop making excuses and saying there is a deal when clearly there is not one and we are not close to one.

Period of calm? Do you actually believe what you are saying? Our only bargaining chip was action over the Xmas period and they gave it away! Hence why we ended up with "the deal of the century"
I have no idea if there is a deal or not. I am clinging to a tiny incling of hope the the CWU will actually achieve something better for us after years of so called deals that are good for us. Like delivering D2Ds for virtually nothing, that was great wasn't it. Have a vote on it and include indoor staff that will get paid £10 a week for doing nothing extra. Hmmm
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Re: Peace talks to avert pre-Christmas action due to resume
Often those who shout for Strike action at Christmas being our strongest bargaining chip have never been on strike at Christmas or the lead up to Christmas. I have and believe me it is not easy to organise as members are often concerned about what they have to provide for families at this time of the year. I come from an area which is strong with good loyal members but even some of them questioned the action at Christmas.
Now we are in November and are a month or so away from the Christmas period but with at a high traffic period and in a good position to get a good deal even if it takes more action.

Are we talking about an increase in frequency of strikes or a plan of rolling function strikes ?
