Re: willful delay
I might be inclined to agree on a limited basis (no evidence as such) that some of the managers are not that good... However, managing posties cannot be easy given the way some of us behave and the fact that we have been part of the public service with a lot of protection for many many decades.
People should be aware that delivery offices differ widely all over the country. For example, I doubt many offices actually use casuals to deliver letters unless we are talking about some very big ones; usually attached to Mail Centres. Let me know if I am wide of the mark!!!
And as for the number of managers and under managers in a office - that also varies. For example we had a cover manager this weekend - he does not even work in our office normally - probably been there about 5 times in all. The office managed itself - he was just pottering around, picking up boxes and liaising with senior staff and PHGS and whatever managers do - he did OK. I think we have at about 80 (est) members of staff.
I said to one of our managers recently that at least with privatisation, we might more high calibre managers. He just laughed and said he doubted it. But, some of them will be culled, for sure!

Re: willful delay
How exactly will it work with using casuals on delivery. Remember these folks are on a zero-contract: the ones that can actually do the job might not be available when you want them. It is very costly to use casuals rather covering internally and they have to be CRB checked and trustworthy.
Yes, the staff numbers have been cut to the bone - there is very little slack in delivery offices; yes, it is cost cutting but that is the real world. Delivery is typically one man one job plus a few spares - so when you have unscheduled absence, it will be a problem.
Perhaps, they can go back to using Casuals. But, mind you, in order to keep these casuals sweet, a lot of the internal Overtime will be gone. Some of us do not like working saturdays but when faced with having a majority saturday casual staff plus a few permanent staff and manager; we soon change our dislike for saturday working.

We have a dom, dom support, underdom, 6 linos, 3 in rle and 4 in callers office , it's about time all these got out and DELIVERED.
Just interested to know who are those people above, dom support, underdom, 6 linos and 3 in rle?
As far as the people I am aware of in our office are, dom(delivery office manager) and a line manager

The bigger the office the more made up jobs.
Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.

Re: willful delay
Why not, their area managers tell them to on the conference calls. Even our DOM goes out delivering cut offs, adamanti wrote:I certainly do not expect any manager to take a walk out as i would assume their usual management work would be disrupted! However it does appear that their managers do expect them to deliver if there is no cover. No snipe intended, simply observation at my DO. In years gone past casuals were brought in when needed, so is it purely a budget driven response to expect managers to cover delivery? Yes they do face a challenge but this is reflected in their pay, which is to manage. Different sides of the coin, is all.

Re: willful delay
dom mainly covers complaints letters etc, his undermanager overlooks the 6 line managers, one for each section, the dom support covers all the staff timetables, rle sort the specials etc, callers office staff are needed. All these people stay in til 1 each day after weve gone out but theres nothing for them to do, i've been on rehab and have done more work than them lot put together! What a waste of money, too many claiming a disability but won't take ihr.
Why are lino's paid full-time ??

They may be unable to if they are on light duties as agreed with ATOS or if they are covered by the Equality Act.demon wrote: the managers should be taking the rounds out

Re: willful delay
Same as our office - just the DOM and a Line Manager and often we get only one when they cannot get a cover for their day off.llcoolh wrote:We have a dom, dom support, underdom, 6 linos, 3 in rle and 4 in callers office , it's about time all these got out and DELIVERED.

The last time we had an Auditor in, there was only the Line Manager: he was really under pressure. Despite our office being regarded as good, there were quite a lot issues pointed out.

Re: willful delay
that is it. our office isnt big. we have i think 20 paired duties. but this is a reuglar thing. if its not covering the walks, its leaving mail for tmoz which then rolls on to the next day and the next day because we dont have enough on ips. we used to have ppl to cover sick ppl. now we dont.adamanti wrote:Had a very heavy Friday, lots of packets, signed for and was not sure we would get round on time, informed manager who said if we managed our time better we should be able to complete! Where Raikky coming from here is that despite bad heavy days there is still an expectation to complete, where as a managers bad day is swept under the carpet because they are unable to manage the situation. We are a large office and also have walks that do not always go out, especially on Saturdays. Fair enough difficult to cover if people have cried off at the last minute, but guarantee come Monday morning still no extra cover in place to deliver failed delivery......why, because too many of our managers simply cannot manage. Forward planning has them scratching their heads.

Re: willful delay
I disagree here. The Manager should take zero walks out.steven100 wrote:The managers should take 1 walk out.....isn't he well paid!!!!! Oh wait will this cause him to work past his time.chrisj wrote:I suppose you must be in a large office... 5 walks is a lot but then trying to get folks for emergency delivery cover/OT is very difficult on a saturday.
What do you expect the manager to do? The manager will still have to report such an occurrence and he/she will be told off for that. And when managers get told or sanctioned, they will pass it down to the staff. Hence, folks will start getting home visits after a couple of days absence, less reduced (rehabilitation) period, bullying, harassment or worse...
Not fair! But we should be careful what we wish for in our spite.
Got bugger all to do with how well he is paid. All it (Managers doing OPG's work) does is mask problems and aid the Mgrs bonus scheme.
Our Mgrs prep OT walks .. (and the OPG's complain if it is not ready when they wish to go out)
The Mgrs rush round the office collecting the missorts (surely OPG's work to deal with)
The Mgrs clear the trays , put bags bag on drop frames etc, etc
Do the Mgrs manage?
I don't think so.
And why then do we not have enough hours in the office?

Re: willful delay
Similar situation here, where I need someones advice.
5 cutoff Loops are left to be delivered by one postie in a van, in 4.5hrs, each loop has approx 3 - 8 large parcels :
a. Do you deliver Loop 1, then their parcels, Loop 2 then the parcels and continue on or...
b. Do you deliver ALL Mail ie, letters/flats etc, then try to deliver ALL the parcels afterwards???
As each Loop is "supposed" to be around 30 mins, so its an almost impossible task to complete, BUT, whats the lesser Evil to take back...Letters or Parcels?
Based on a True Story! Happening nearly everyday now...
THANKS!

Ask your manager. That's what they get the big bucks for.Thunderthighs wrote:Similar situation here, where I need someones advice.
