And how do they get the idea that people actually want junk mail, let alone a cold call after.
What a monumental cock up of a bad idea.
The letters will be scanned by the existing machines in MCs not by delivery staff
This will tell firms when their marketing messages have been delivered
That line from the article suggests that delivery staff may have to scan them on the doorstep, it would probably be a tweak to the PDA software (would probably mean that very walk would need a pda). There would also need to be provision for any stuff that the machines can't handle to be scanned manually

It would be physically impossible to scan every item before its posted.
There is not enough time in the day to even think about doing this, and the pda isint exactly reliable as it is.
Doorstep scanning would not work, and of they implementated this then eveyone would be leaving nearly their whole walks and packets and taken out one loop every day.if royal mail did introduce doorstep scanning then they would have a nightmare on their hands with failed deliveries and parcels.

"In July, Royal Mail revealed it was spending £70million on a system able to put a barcode on bulk mail letters, allowing their progress to be tracked.
The technology will let its customers, such as banks and energy companies, know the precise day on which their mailouts are delivered.
Nearly 50 firms have signed up to take part in the initiative, which starts next year."
Maybe it's a way of Royal Mail regaining big customers lost to DSA. :nana

It's probably for DSA to go through!

The system is called Mailmark and it is essentially a tweak of the Red Tag trial a few years ago. I don't think there are any plans for doorstep scanning, although every walk should be using a PDA now anyway.

Just read through about it on RM's website and from this:
ou’ll know where your mail consignment is in our network, when it’s scheduled to arrive and how well it performs – all at a click.
To me that suggests that even if they're not scanned on the doorstep, that they'll at least get scanned in DOs.
Retail customers using low sort, unsorted or meter options for Letters and Large Letters
Access customers sending machinable Letters and Large Letters
Business Mail Advanced and Response Services customers (payment on account only).
That's going to mean that the each sorting frame for manual letters and large letters that handles PPI, meter or Mailsort (wouldn't surprise me if DSA gets included at some point) is going to need a PDA to scan each item. Not many MCs have FSMs so maybe any MC that doesn't will loose all large letter sorting to one that does. With the way it's going I don't think it'll be too many years until every item is scanned at every office it passes through and every item gets scanned on the doorstep with perhaps the exception of d2d

As far as I know it's all getting scanned via the mech. For letters, I would think that going through the CSS machine might be used to indicate the delivery date

More likely it'll be the LSMs (does any MC even have any of the old LSMs or MTTs anymore?), iLSMs and IMPs at the inward MCs.

Hmmmmm - is this the same sort of service that TNT are currently promising for their foot deliveries I wonder. I can only see a pre delivery machined scan being done and then the assumption that the item will actually be delivered - from what we have heard from the London area, that will not be the case.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

Like most brainwaves our bosses come up with.
If it works on paper then it must work in real life.
If these have to be scanned before its either sorted or delivered, this is all going to take time.
Time what we dont have and will have a severe knock on effect on deliveries.

The first video here > http://www.otmltd.com/docs11/latest_new ... xVyJ.shtml entitled 'Our Mailmark journey' gives a breakdown of what Mailmark was, including Red Tag, and all its other forms since its introduction 7 years ago

Jesus Wept,

Just looked at the first video.

Schoolboy presentation and I have a passion hate for 'foot rockers' doing presentation.

Video 2: "Historic, Dynamic Uuuumm, Uuummm" Painful to listen to. Flows like peanut butter on a fork :Boo hoo!

Video 3: Nervous chap, aka 'The Crosslegger' - Lots of things interacting here, systems talking and database updating. - Will follow this to see the output interaction as not always does c follow b follow a. - Plenty of steps for the 'Computer says No' syndrome. :speak to the hand

Bulk marketing, single scan on del date. Allows direct data to customer on day/volume of order. Good for cust to see trends and market impact. - Will be interesting on what RM plan to do at doorstep level.

Based upon those presentations, I would have gone to sleep. In a previous life, had it been a member of my team doing this I would be cringing if it was if front of a customer.

X-fingers gents, let's see how this rolls.
