I think you all missed the point, AFTER the deal has been done the next 3 - 5 years will be last in which the union will have a strategic influence on our workplace. A Shareholders group would al least have a chance to change or influence the direction of the company at shareholders meetings. come on thought you were all a bit more switched on. Sorry for bothering to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

That's really not our problem - how many will hold onto their shares after the 3 and 5 year period - if the union had any chance of influencing business decisions it certainly wouldn't be with a minimum shareholding which will be ever decreasing and TBH I'd prefer to make my own decision, as would the 30,000+ non union members which the CWU would not control. It's a last gasp attempt at maintaining a semblance of influence in affairs.

What do you think hedge funds do, where a collective comes under one who acts as their representative!

A hedge fund manager speaks for his investors because he delivers huge returns,the minute he stops doing that,he ceases to be.A shareholder group would not be delivering returns but instead most likely reducing the value of the shareholding by fighting to maintain our terms and conditions,it's a completely counter-intuitive untenable position.

A hedge fund exerts influence over a company by taking a stake and convincing the other shareholders that it's in their best interests financially to do as they say.
Good luck convincing the other major shareholders that it's in their best interests to increase labour costs and protect our terms and conditions.

At least it got you thinking, the point of this topic is that the union after the 5 year deal Is done will effectively be sidelined due to the very nature of owning shares and yearly premiums becoming the be all and end all of the main shareholders. We will have no influence at all and will become irrelevant. Thank for the replies.

On re-reading some of the posts an interesting point was raised regarding a seat on the board - now maybe that is what the union are angling for but in reality what good would that do for the members interests.
