Cost of not striking for average postman in a delivery unit

Post by stephen500 »

I thought i would re-post this calculation i did for the cost of striking verus the loss of earnings over a ten year period. I combined it with loss of pension and contributions for five years from 60-65.
So if you think striking is costing you money look at the long term cost to a postman who does £20 worth of d2d and works four hours o/t a week.
Calculations for o/t are at £8.00 per hour (i know it is slightly more and would be worse still if it was at s/a rates)

You lose £60 a day for now but a postman earning £20 per week on d2d and doing four hours o/t a week covering s/l a/l, stands to lose the following over a ten year period (Pension calc over five year period)

£20 d2d per week
£32 a week in o/t (lost because of covering for nothing s/l and a/l)
=£2704 per year
or £27040.00 over ten years

Cost of strike @ £60 per day lets say 20 times =£1200

Loss to those postman throwing towel in £25840

Oh and next £10000 per annum pension 60-65 £50000

Plus contributions 60-65 @£20 pw for 5 years= £5200

Full cost of loss pension and contributions postman £52500
So loss of d2d and o/t = 25840
loss of pensions and contributions =£52500
Total losses= £78340
@ £64.60 per day (gross pay) means you would have to have been on strike
for 1212 days before the union loses you money.

Those figures are for people only earning £20 per week d2d and doing 4 hrs o/t a week, if you do more then that you will lose even more!

I wouldn't hold your breath they once sold a 20 min break in my office for a £300 one off payment.

I pretty much agree with you.

I've been telling all the public I can that RM want to give us a £7.50 per week pay rise. Then I say then want to take £25 off us in bonuses (D2D etc) and give us £25 more work to do (cover sick leave etc)

It was a rough calculation but if we roll over and take it we will be the equivalent of £40 per week worse off. And that is not just this year, that is forever.
