On the flat they pretty much roll along on their own.
There are guidelines for gradients for very good reasons.
aye but im on about the lightweight trolley.. they are still 32kgs to pull fully loaded. with 16kg per pannier. and a total overall weight of 38.6 kg. even on slight gradients they take their toll.
But they are only 32kg if you fill them to that weight. If its taking its toll then reducing the weight should alleviate some of the problems.
Well tbt you can lead a horse to water.
but a pencil must be lead.
Nope. Its graphite with a clay binder normally in a wooden sheath, which I imagine could be quite painful, what with splinters and all :Very Happy

I think there is a middle ground to how to work for the best. :hmmmm

I use both a bike and a trolley on my delivery depending on the amount of packets. After the revision it will be trolley only. With the bike I normally carry a light bag of around 8kg which is a couple of bundles and light packets. Using the trolley I tend to work using a light bag (sometimes a mini bag) of around 4kg which normally has just one bundle and a few packets before moving it along for another loop.

The results.

The bike method tends to make my back ache (even with just 8kg) on the heavier days.

Using a trolley the proper way of pushing it all the way around kills my upper back.

Using the trolley with small loops works without causing me any distress and also fills my delivery time, even on lighter days.

That's just me though.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Undoubtedly the job exacerbates any problems but it isn't the cause.

2. You need to throw away all your phone apps, gps, pedometers and all the rest of that crap. They don't work.
Thinking you walk 12 miles a day at 8mph isn't doing you any favours.
Unless you actually understand what your body is doing each day, you won't be able to look after it properly.

3. Use your trollies.
You still walk the same distance trollies only recently came into use. If you can claim for a injury caused by royal mails negligence of it's staffs working practices due to lack of understanding or equipment not available at the time. Why should we not make a claim just look forward to the phone calls.

There's quite a few in our office who have Arthritis, most of whom are in their forties. Outside of work, however, I only know of one person around that age with Arthritis. They say causality and correlation aren't two sides of the same coin, but It does make you wonder.

From the moment a postal worker on delivery gets out of bed of a morning, until they arrive back home after finishing their shift, they do nothing but walk for the vast majority of that time, each and every working day.
Surely, even you must see that, that simply isn't conducive to good health. How on earth, can it be?

because neanderthal or cro-magnon humans were biggger and stronger, and they only delivered from 5kg pouches to a few caves which only took about an hour to do. :Very Happy

well my old duty was 95% steep hills. royal mail operated a bag system matrix in which the bags started off at 16kg for the 1st & 2nd bags then it dropped down on a desending scale after each bag. the 9th or 10th were to have 4 or 5 kg in them. this was designed with the cwu to ''reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries''. now this could be interpreted as you had to carry 16kg in your first bag, quite easily misunderstood due to lack of understanding. even though i used to split my first bag down and leave some mail in the bag box at the bottom of the hill, the streets had nearly 70 doors on each side. so on heavy days even with the bag split down. you could still be carrying 10 or 12 kg uphill.,,,remember the days when we used to deliver ''cable'' mags, then came sky mags!!. when me knees packed up, simpson millar says i had not told royal mail i was having proplems with my knees. i had not put them on notice. well thats true because i didnt know they were damaged. it came like a bolt out the blue. apart from the odd twinge now and then,, i was ok. then one day,,,bang. me knee gave way and that was that. the solicitors said it was not sufficient proof that it was caused by the job. they eventually dropped the case against royal mail.

That's daft.
There's more walking wounded in my office these days, than at any time I've ever known, and that includes youngsters in their 20s, it just simply cannot be coincidental that the upsurge in general ill-health has coincided with the longer walks.
Apart from myself, and my colleagues, I do not know, nor have I ever known, anybody to do so much walking, and be in a better state of overall health and fitness for it.

Because for the majority of their existence they were carrying a rug, 2 bits of leather, some small sharp stones and a pointy stick. Also they moved a slot slower than we did as expending more energy than you are taking in when food is scarce is a recipe for disaster.

Not forgetting that for most of Homo Sapiens existence 99% of them were dead before they reached the average age of a Postman in 2013.

before the last agreement the walks were ok...
the increase last time made some walks become a strain on the knee.....there was this walk which was put together so badly that it actually caused the knee to burn....this was friction within the knee and it caused me to get sacked.

its not rocket science that the more to increase the walks sizes the faster the arte of problems will occur.

only way to protect posties from problems in later life is for the union to work out a way to get one case to stick and really hit royal mail hard so they have to take fatigue and wear and tear seriously.
