Postman snap gets burglar

A burglar was caught out when a quick-thinking postman spotted he was wearing gloves on a glorious day and snapped his photograph.

Matthew Taylor, 27, targeted the property in The Shore, Bolton-le-Sands, after a friend told him he had successfully burgled a property in the street.

Taylor, who days before had broken into a house in Lancaster and stolen £880 of electrical goods, visited the street and stole a laptop, iPad and mobile phones while the occupiers slept.

The following morning a postman who lived in the street noticed Taylor acting suspiciously.

He seemed to be paying close attention to one house and despite it being a hot sunny day in June, was wearing gloves. Knowing there had been a burglary in the area, the man took a photo of Taylor and handed it to the police, who identified him.

Officers visited the property Taylor was staying at in Morecambe and discovered a number of items stashed behind a sofa he had been sleeping on.

His fingerprints were on a number of items.

Taylor, of Alexandra Road, Morecambe, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and was jailed for three years when he appeared at Preston Crown Court.

DC Paul Donnelly said: “Following the burglary in Bolton-le-Sands, officers carried out house to house inquiries where they came across a diligent resident who’d spotted Taylor in the area at the time of the burglary. The resident had questioned why someone would be wearing gloves in June and had the foresight to take his photograph.

“Taylor was subsequently identified and we are where we are today partly thanks to it; this was great work from a vigilant member of the public.”

This Posties vigilance and diligence secured his neighbourhood from a thieving toe rag, who had history!
