Last time we organised the picket in time slots of 2 hours, 1 came and 1 left, or 2 or 3 or 4 covering the whole of the working day - we had a police presence, it was an ex postie who brought us coffee from McDonalds on occasion

In 2007 because I was the earliest start(0430) and I was the only one who started before 0500 for the first 30 minutes of picket duty I was effectively holding the line against myself in case I decided to scab.
Sometimes I would get bored take a few steps over the line and then tell myself to f**k off.
An Industrial Estate is a cold and lonely place at 0430.

What guidelines are given to Delivery Drivers who drop the mail off? Have they:

A) Got to make their own choice to cross a picket line at each Delivery Office they visit? Or:
B) Are they given specific instructions before the leave the Mail Centre?

This is where different functions striking on different days doesn't work. During the last strike, the drivers at our Mail Centre were told by the CWU that the picket lines at the DOs would stand aside for them. Some of the drivers went to DOs, decided that they couldn't cross a picket line in any circumstances, came back, got suspended and then the whole Mail Centre plus many DOs went out in support - http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 18&t=19069

It's going to be easy for RM to divide and conquer if the union make the same mistake again

Thanks for the reply B......... That's the sort of problem I was anticipating. If Drivers don't cross a picket line then surely all that's necessary is a few Posties outside a DO (to ask the Delivery Driver not to cross their picket line) and it won't matter how many Posties are inside the DO there's going to be no mail to deliver.

This would perhaps help those DOs that are worried about the majority of their guys actually coming into work on the strike day.
