Post Office worker Dawn Midgley admits stealing money from a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s

A Post Office worker stole money from an elderly customer suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, a court heard.

Dawn Midgley, of Priory Way, Mirfield, took a total of £1,000 out of 73-year-old Sheila Boylan’s account over three separate dates.

Midgley was caught after confessing the thefts to a colleague.

The 45-year-old said that she was deep in dept and been forced to turn to a payday loan company.

Kirklees magistrates told her she faces sentencing by a crown court judge on November 4 after taking advantage of vulnerable Mrs Boylan.

The court heard that Mrs Boylan, who uses a wheelchair, regularly made withdrawals from the Post Office based at Food Fair in Mirfield.

Prosecutor James Weekes said she would leave her card with staff to take the cash out of her account.

But on August 7, one of the workers became suspicious Midgley was withdrawing more than she was authorised to.

Midgley later resigned from her job but police were called.

When officers searched her home they found two store receipts in a shredder, showing withdrawals of £400 from Mrs Boylan’s account on April 12 and then £250 on April 13.

Mike Sisson-Pell, mitigating, said that his client had accepted that her victim was particularly vulnerable because of her physical and mental difficulties.

There is nothing here that the word 'mitigating' can be applied to.
Disgusting.

Post Office clerk stole from OAP to pay Wonga loan

A post office clerk stole from a disabled pensioner after getting into debt over payday loans.

Dawn Midgley took £1,000 from the vulnerable pensioner’s account on three separate occasions to pay back loans she had taken out with payday lender Wonga.

Joanna Butler-Savage, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court the wheelchair-bound victim was 73 and suffered from diabetes and Alzheimer’s as well as recently having a stroke.

Midgley, 45, was working at the Mirfield branch on Huddersfield Road, where she had access to the woman’s bank card. She was confronted by her manager after £350 was found on her desk on August 7.

When questioned why the cash was there, Midgley claimed she had user her own mother’s card and said her son had taken that home. She was asked to go and get that card and left the branch but did not return, later resigning.

Miss Butler-Savage said she then met another member of staff in the street and when asked why she was not at work, admitted drawing some money out of the pensioner’s account. She told her colleague she had taken a loan out with Wonga. She also said she was due to take her son and a friend of his to Silverstone.

When her home was searched two receipts were discovered showing she had also made two previous withdrawals in April for £400 and £250.

Ian Brook, mitigating, said Midgley had been made redundant in 2008. She started work at the post office in 2009 but struggled with money as her husband was in and out of work.

Midgley, of Priory Way, Mirfield, took out around eight loans but struggled to pay them back as the interest increased. Her last loan of £500 took almost all of her monthly salary of £600 to pay back.

Mr Brook said Midgley was ashamed of her actions and said the cash had only gone towards food shopping and bills.

Sentencing, Recorder Paul Kirtley said: “Not only was this a breach of the trust put in you by the post office, but it was taking of advantage of a particularly vulnerable individual.”

Midgley admitted three charges of theft and was given a nine month prison sentence, suspended for two years, with 200 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £1,000 compensation.

I don't condone her actions in the slightest, in fact I deplore them, and find them utterly reprehensible.

But, what kind of 'master criminal' keeps evidence of their thefts?
Just how stupid is this person?
The fact that they borrowed from Wonga would seem to suggest very.

Its worrying how the likes of WONGA, pay day loan companies are doing forcing people into more debt with impossible interest rates, they are nothing more than loan sharks in suits.

There is an alternative such as food banks, cut back on your out goings, make arrangement with creditors to pay back in affordable amounts or Bankruptcy is really the last option but its better than than loan sharks.

I agree with you for the most part.
Wonga (and the rest - of which there are plenty) are legalised loan sharks.

But I don't think they are forcing anyone into more debt. People make the choice, they aren't forced to take loans.

The main alternative is don't borrow. Especially not from one of this lot.
If any person can't afford a bill, it is far better to contact the company in question and discuss the situation.
Most will find they will be happy to come to an agreement with you. Even if that means they have to wait a week for their money.
Which will normally be a lot cheaper.

All sensible options, its a shame some people don't have that education before they leave school about life skills, Payday loans adverts are highly seductive to people who don't know any better. yes they do make a choice, when they are desperate they don't think straight and these companies exploit that weakness to the full. I despise them and I feel nothing but contempt whenever I view their adverts on TV or splashed across my browser screen which I find annoying.

When I was at school one of my teacher made a point of teaching us how to budget money, calculate how much a bill would be by working the unit per price used. shopping and rents, he was always going on about living within your means, lecturing us about how some young people today are anti social yobbos living on benefits going nowhere the novelty wearing off getting bored, causing trouble to fill in their time and one day it will be your turn to be the old people moaning about those same yobbos, the way of the world etc it was illuminating even if it wasn't part of the eduction syllabus at the time, we did sort of understood what he was saying, to our young mind we didn't think much of it then now I am glad he taught me that.

 What is even more worrying is how vulnerable old people are left to fend forthemselves like this. Why are there no family or care worker around?

They should be subject to proper regulation.
I know they come under the FSA etc. But there should be a limit on percentage rates etc.
As pointed out, not everyone is capable of making appropriate choices in these matters.

But since Thatcher, no such thing as society and all that, it's up to each individual to look after themselves and tough luck if they can't manage the extortionate percentage rates on offer, can't resist the many gambling sites advertised all over the place and can't be fortunate enough to be able to fend for themselves in an increasingly selfish Britain.
I remember everyone complaining a lot during the 1970s but it was a much better place to live than we've got now, and who could have dreamt of food banks back then?
