Yeah, they REALLY were the good old days, but of course we didn't realise it at the time.
When they said about 5 day weeks we jumped at them. One delivery, bring it on!. Later starts,
let's have them!.
Now ......O.M.G. it's all ruined.
What a shame.

I was walking around today thinking of when i started in 1988 and how my delivery would have been just 2 long roads and about 1hr 30 mins worth. Its now 4hrs + and iam over twice the age i was.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

We should have stopped at the 5 day week and stayed with 2 deliveries, nights sorters, early starts, things got done and everybody was honky dorey I certainly had no complaints the jobs did have its moments and I used to curse the early starts but loved the early finish, if you were lucky you could fly round and finish for 11.30am and in the summer heat wave you could finish before it got really hot.

Remember a few years ago when you could actually be on delivery at your first door at 6.45 A.M.?
And wake the bastards up on a Saturday..... :chuckle

I started in 1998 and can honestly say I actually enjoyed going to work then. I loved the early starts and early finishes and on a light day could be home at 9:00 (very occasionally). Now I hate the job and can't wait to retire. Only another year and I'm out of here. Thanks Royal Mail.

I started from school in 84 and loved the job even the managers were good proper old school ex army/navy who if given respect would give it back, not like these idiot bullyboys of today who have no hands on experience of the job.

Been in the job since '87 and remember one duty I had was almost a straight line of 3 streets joined together. After a national Monday holiday or such like started my duty at 06.45 and finished at 07.05!!! Then at christmas we had a student to help us for a few weeks. I got the same student for 3 years and after the first year we took day about to delivey the mail while the other went home for a kip before meeting later to go back to the office. :dance HAPPY DAYS ARE GONE :thumbdown

Joined in the early 90's when still had 2 deliveries and 6 day week. My duty on a week day was in for 6am and throw my walk off as nights had sorted everything. Out the door by 6.30am and back by 9am then 2nd delivery of a small bundle of letters. Out the door by 10am and job done by 11am. Saturdays I was on delivery by 6.30am and home by 8.30am which ment away football and pub crawls were available. Driving duties were just firms and parcels and a walk would fit in one bag on a good day and 3 max on a bad one. Then times changed.
Can understand the 5 day week which was great. Rest days were great. One delivery was fine but the walks started getting longer. Parcel areas bigger and pouching drops more and more. But we still did the job and made time and enjoyed it. Then came cadra and time and motion and that drove things down and down to where we are now. The managers of the old days retired or took evr so the ones who started from the bottom and made their way up and got respect and respected their staff went and in came the facts and figure managers who only care about budgets and cost savings and not about their staff who at the end of the day can get that work out the office. Know the knowledge of the job and can work as a team. 4.5 hour joint deliveries in shared vans with lapsing on most days and then take more out if you finish early. Fairness is a thing of the past.

Defiantly not the same as the old days.
