Bosses at Royal Mail have ordered postmen to ditch their famous red cycles as they are no longer suitable. But what do you think?

The company has already begun a move to end almost all two-wheeled deliveries in Shropshire, where only five per remain.

They say workers are handling more parcels than in the past and are now looking to replace 24,000 English-made bicycles with trolleys and vans, claiming bikes cannot carry enough post or travel far enough to be efficient.

The change means staff who use bikes to cycle to and from work will now have to walk or use cars, and union bosses say it is a case of ‘health and safety gone mad’.

Lee Barron, Midland’s regional secretary for the Communication Workers Union, which represents Royal Mail workers, said: “There isn’t really a health and safety issue. Larger parcels should be delivered in vans not on bikes so I do not understand the logic in this change.”

The second last paragraph is incorrect, workers will still be able to get to work by their own cycles, many do around the country despite the removal of the sorely missed Pashley bikes.
