Subpostmasters warn of 'crisis'

Subpostmasters have called for urgent action from the Government to prevent the closure of thousands of post offices.
The National Federation of SubPostmasters warned of a "growing crisis" in the network amid the controversial privatisation of the Royal Mail.

The federation called for the sell off to be halted, or at the very least for the Government to retain a stake in the business, saying there were "real concerns" that postmasters could soon be hit by fresh pay cuts as new owners seek to maximise their profits.
Members of the public are being urged to sign special postcards which will be sent to MPs as part of the campaign.

George Thomson, general secretary of the NFSP, said: "The Government and Post Office Ltd continue to insist that all is well for the UK's post offices, but we know that the reality is very different. Subpostmasters are finding it increasingly difficult to make a living from their post office. Times have never been harder and urgent action is required to ensure this vital service remains in communities across the UK.

"We have reached a critical point in the future of the post office network. Doing nothing is not an option as the current situation is unsustainable. Unless we see new work and reasonable rates of pay for subpostmasters we face a future where this vital public service, which offers support and guidance to millions of people, is irreparably damaged."
Around a third of subpostmasters' pay is generated by the sale of Royal Mail products, but the federation accused the Government of "abject failure" to deliver promised new work.
