Ex RM Manager wrote:I wouldn't say 99% of the public support the strike. A LOT of the General Public can only see the after effects of the strike : they don't get their post, and therefore it's the fault of the striking postie. Also there are very few national strikes these days, so public perception is that the strikers are very old fashioned.

That point of view is one I do not share so don't jump on me and don't shoot the messenger.

I agree with you and fully understand the stance from the uninformed public.
Also, a lot of them are actually bitter that someone has taken a stand in this country and stood up for what they believe and it not being them. You see calls for Eastern European workers on all kinds of message boards, people have no idea what harm an influx of cheap labour into this country would do. its hard to figure out what the majority of feeling is but unfortunately, the biased way its been reported in the media I think generally the public is not 100% with us

WHAT THE f**k???

Either I'm not being clear enough here, or you're just a bit slow???

Managed by people like me? I've stayed out for every one of these strikes and been on the picket line for the majority of them too! I've swayed a few of the "can't afford it" guys I work with into staying out too.

Now i'll try again....

The thread is about the public not inderstanding the issues and many not supporting us. If you think they all do, then good for you but that doesn't seem to be the case to me. What I have said in previous posts is (and I thought this was made clear) the opinions I'm hearing from the public. NOT MY OWN!

Now take the time to read them before thinking I'm against you. I'm just saying what I'm hearing/reading from others. NOT MY PERSONAL VIEWS!

Sorry Rich mate. Your original post was a bit difficult to understand. Too much closely typed sentences. I did work out that you were quoting other people and asking for responses and arguments to use against them, but it was a bit difficult to follow.
Ease up lads, Rich is on our side (I hope!). :Very Happy

Actually seemed to be more than on the first round of strikes, so perhaps it is getting across that it is more than just about money. A lot of people are getting shafted at work and I think they are glad to see that some people are fighting back.
Only had one idiot who asked me what was going on and when I told him we were on strike and gave him a leaflet, threw it on the ground and said 'why weren't you on strike under Maggie'. He walked off before I could explain what it is about, and that we had been on strike during the Thatcher years.
I think he might have been a Tory (or New Labour), but to judge by the state of him I think he was a benefit recipient who was upset about having to go to the DSS office to collect his giro. Sad.
I've heard that crap form plenty of sad arse Labour Party hacks over the last ten years, but I've been on strike when five different Prime Ministers have had their useless arses in 10 Downing Street. I've been active in different campaigns and movements under seven different Prime Ministers since I left school. One thing I can say is there is no difference between the Tory and Labour Party once they gain power. They'll screw the working class evey time regardless of the colour of their rosette, or the colour of our skins. More and more of the public can see why we're on strike. The enemy have lost ground since June, which is why the maggots at the top have gone missing. There is a lot more to be done in convincing the public and this is where the CWU must use the financial resources they have to put forward our case, which is something you have been arguing for on here for some time. Let's keep up the pressure on the enemy, and if we lose, let's go down fighting all the way and remember, we can always do the job according to their rules, which suits us far more than it will suit them. We can draw our inspiration from any number of people who have lived and died to fight for a better world. They draw theirs from Thatcher, Hitler, Franco, Mussolini, Uribe, Salazar. I'd rather be a picket than a scab, or a screw. Why? Because I retain the respect of my family and friends and my self-respect. Let the scum throw our leaflets on the ground or cross our picket lines. In return, let's make their lives a living hell.

What's wrong with these bloody people! Do they expect us to swallow everything that is put on the plate! There is nothing wrong in belonging to a union. Some of the strongest unions in the world are in the U.S.A. If those people were in our situation they would be the first ones to cry! W--NKERS

A lot of them are incapable of realising that this attack on us, and other workers, by the Government and the erosion of our wages and conditions will affect them eventually.

Spoke to a customer on my walk last week reguarding the strikes
he said "hope you get what you wan't"
i said it's not a case of getting what we want
it's more a case of keeping what we've got..

and not a lot of people know that.

Agree with the "not a lot of people know that" attitude.

I'm sure if joe blogs knew all the details we'd have much more support. As it is they're going off of lines about us demanding 27% increases and giving nothing in return.

Once they know the truth they support us. It's just getting the message across.

My sincere apologies Rich, misread your post and thought you were a manager in the making. Yes, to all the people who have asked I have taken the trouble to explain it to can see our point about trying to save the service and all the problems with life OUTSIDE work that 'flexibility' will bring, but the ones that don't bother to find out or just assume we're being unreasonable ('the 27% increase') and rely on the media lies might only realise if they start getting mail at 16:30 brought by a casual worker then it may be too late. . . .

Strange that most of those professing to be against it are misinformed and think we are lazy money grabbers who are striking for more pay. The ones that are on our side (apart from the Post Mistress and she is sympathetic) all seemed to have looked into it independently or at least listened to both sides.

My basic question is to everyone who is against this strike would you accept a £30 per week pay cut which involves more work (the D2D increasing but not being paid for) but Royal Mail said sorry no talking that's the offer take it or leave it. Well we left it.

IMHO we were pushed into a strike by an arrogant, bullying, opprobrious and down right condescending senior Royal Mail management. Aided and abetted by a generally sycophantic, weak willed and fawning local management.

I have personal experience of a Royal Manager who treated me fairly and in turn received respect and flexibility from me, however as he did not join the old boys club of the DOM and refused to do things he disagreed with he was not made a substantive manager. Royal Mails biggest problem is that they have not stopped the rot at the top and have decided to attack what they perceived as a weak work force, that would accept anything good or bad. Well the worm turned and bit them in the bollocks.

Can't resist responding to this one, even though I said I wouldn't post again. Sorry.

1) I don't believe that people are bitter about you taking a stand when they won't - they don't because they couldn't care less about anything much - they couldn't care less what you are fighting for or doing right or wrong - they just want their mail service. And some couldn't even care less about that since it means the sackloads of junkmail have stopped for a while.

2) Regarding Eastern Europeans. I don't know what planet you are on but there are already a million or more here, and yes, it has harmed us, which is why my other half cleans toilets in 5 jobs for a living now instead of working in a factory, and our unemployment rate has been going up at the same time as the employment rate. As far as I know, *all* the unions are in favour of them coming here. No union that I know of has said that they want to protect British workers jobs. Why not? Why should any member of the public, *or* employee with a union, support the unions when they have done sod all to protect our jobs? Their attitude has sealed the each-man-for-himself culture into society.

3) As far as the public opinion goes, if I understand correctly, they didn't want the RM to go private at all, but at the same time, they would not tolerate notions such as 'job and finish', since the RM seems to be just about the only place in the country that still operates such practices. The rest of us have had to, over the past 10 years, adapt to 12 hour continental shift patterns, agency work where they can send you home without pay 5 minutes after you turned up, not even being certain of getting a week's work, being replaced by EU citizens and being expected to become limitlessly efficient.
Regarding pensions, there are people who have worked and paid into pension schemes all of their lives and will not receive a penny, let alone be able to collect it early. People resent having to pay the gold-plated pensions of public sector workers, especially the ones who get to retire early while they must keep on probably well past pension age.
People have had a bellyful of taxation, and all this government has done is to increase the number ways that they can screw money out of people. People are sick of seeing their money flowing to the government while they have less and less disposable income themselves. I can't speak for all of them obviously, but I would guess that some of that rings true with you.

4) Wages - the posties pay seems pretty good to me. The last full time job my husband (age 48 - on scrap heap now) had was doing 12 hour shifts for £5.79 an hour on a high speed production line. His pay didn't increase for 10 years (and he's lost the job to an EU now so it matters no longer). The notion that the average manual unskilled workers pay is £440/week...where on earth does that come from? Here in the East Midlands most manual unskilled workers are on minimum wage - £6/hour.

There is always a danger when you work for a huge organisation that you become so introspective that you lose touch with the alternative. The sort of jobs I have described might be all that's left. The sort of security you get is almost unheard of these days.

As a member of the public (not posting with my small struggling business disgruntled head on...) I would advise all to think carefully about what you wish for. Are you really doing this to 'save' the Royal Mail, or to save yourselves? If it is to save yourselves, I would be inclined to be prepared to accept new practices in exchange for your relatively good job security, pay, hours and conditions. Jobs for life have disappeared, whether we like it or not. and the res tof us work the longest hours in Europe. Work with the RM to make it lean and efficient - a business that every business in the country will want to use. Unless you want to be outside in the cold with us, competing with the army of cheap and temporary labour or having to deal with Bliar's army of civil servants in the dole office that is...

Good luck

PS Most managers are idiots, and many people who are promoted to management from the bottom are the worst kind.
Why anyone ever expects anything much from them is beyond me. They aren't worth getting upset about. I just laugh at them - my experience of anyone walking about with a clipboard is the same as those who walk about with an executive case. Open the lid and you'll find nothing much other than porno mages and a stale sandwich.

I had to stop reading at page 6 as I was begining to feel my blood boil.
People saying things like we're lazy. We have to accept changes, we should just get on with it. Tough luck we're losing our pension. Shouldn't be allowed to strike, and all the other utter bollocks.

I don't know how to respond really. I could go on a huge tirade and blast 'the public' for being clueless, selfish idiots, but I decided against it. It feels like I'm just wasting my time and energy posting a retort. You can't change the minds of some people even when you explain to them, indepth, whats going on.
I guess some people can't do without their books, Cds and DVDs from Amazon.
