You CAN join in. You are, despite what the previous poster stated, protected from being singled-out for dismissal.
You could, of course, join the union. It's easy to do, online. Best not to post your application... I heard there may be a strike

Don't bother, you made your choice by not joining the union. I'm sure your managers will appreciate someone coming in to make their tea for them. I'm also sure that you'll be declining any pay offer that might be achieved by IA. if your a new starter then stop putting it off and fill in the form, you need protection more than anybody.

I just started this thread so people who are not in the union know where they stand

As per usual before a strike many will rejoin only to cancel subs once the dust has settled!Imo non-union members shouldn't get the benefits or whatever the union paying members got for them!
But then again RM love these types so will do so just to wind the union members up

Diving in where others fear to tread ...
I'm not in CWU - and I'll give you what I believe is a damn good reason (but you choose). I started work in 1976 - and immediately joined the union (working for the Ministry of Defence at the time - I joined the CSU) - and was a fervent union member for a good part of my working life. When I went to University I spent a year on industrial placement in 1981 working for the Equal Opportunities Commission in Manchester - so I rejoined the CSU - and went out on strike with them (and stood on the picket line - I remember my Uni tutor visiting and saying "You should NOT be doing this" .. I replied "This is Work Placement - this is the REAL world - and I'm involving myself in it". He couldn't argue with the logic.) Three and a bit years ago I was made redundant from my previous job (Computer Software Developer) after 25 years service. During that time I was a member of ASTMS/Unite and for the last seven years of my job I was the Union Rep ...I fought a few good individual cases for my members - and kept a few in work - but when the company started to go on its a*se I got little/no support from the Union - despite phone calls/emails/letters - all on MY time. Meanwhile the same Union was making a big deal of certain other disputes i.e. the ones that got maximum press/tv publicity for the Union ... our "little company" was not considered worthy of any assistance at all regarding our problems.
That was when I totally lost faith in the Unions ... but ... new job ... maybe ???
So ... I join RM - and I have to hunt out a CWU membership form - dutifully filled in and passed on - what happens ?? F**k all - no money taken out of wages, no nothing. What do I think ??? Another union who don't give a t*ss. So I left it at that ...
I might not be a Union member - but I like to think I'm a damn sight more Socialist than most ... and if strike comes to strike I WILL NEVER repeat NEVER cross a picket line ... assuming the CWU members in my neck of the woods can be *rsed to set up a picket line.

I have filled my ballot paper in and its a NO simply because the union SOLD us down the river before when we supported them through thick and thin now they want our support again. Plus the fact of the last strike when we had the one day strikes on a Thursday say those that had a day off got paid and lo and behold the strike was Friday the week after where the same personnel got paid once again and you tell me that's fair? Pfffft don't thinks so. And if I vote NO and have to strike its a form of bullying in my eyes. Never mind this one day strike here and there strike till you win simple then I may go with it..

After your detailed rant about past union experience,( being an ex -rep and committed union supporter), I find it strange with that level of morale belief that you have so easily accepted the fact that your application to join the union was ignored !!!! I do not accept your reasoning for one minute, despite the fact that you say you would never pass a picket line. Join the union and get involved with the fight we cannot afford to lose !!!
