Union blames walkout on 'silent' ministers and chiefs

Homes and firms will get no mail for a week after postal workers began their longest strike for 11 years.
The unions blamed the mass walkout, set to cost businesses millions of pounds, on ministers' "deafening silence" and the absence of Royal Mail chiefs from last-minute talks.
The CWU hit out at Government departments, including the Home Office under Jacqui Smith, which are in charge of the Royal Mail, claiming they should intervene.
Its leader Billy Hayes said: "The Government owns the Post Office and the Royal Mail.

"But amazingly they've not shown the slightest bit of interest in the outcome of this dispute. If this was Northern Rock they would have their chequebooks out.
"But their silence has been deafening."
He questioned how much Royal Mail wanted to avert a strike. He said chief executive Adam Crozier and chairman Allan Leighton were "nowhere to be seen" during 20 hours of talks over the past two days. Staff are staging two 48-hour strikes.
The first started at noon yesterday and the second will begin at 3am on Monday meaning there could be no deliveries before Thursday. The CWU has also threatened "guerrilla action" - walkouts by parts of the business from October 15.
Talks were continuing yesterday. A source said: "They are moving inch by painful inch towards one another but there is still a lot of ground between them."
The dispute started over pay and union fears that Royal Mail's "modernisation" could cost 40,000 jobs.
The major sticking points now are over changes to working practices and the firm's method of tackling its pension fund crisis.
A spokesman for the Department of Business, one of the Mail's Government owners, said: "The dispute is for the management and the unions to resolve."
Bosses say the business needs to modernise to compete with new rivals and email.
The firm said: "Calling further strikes will not change the need for Royal Mail to become more flexible and efficient if it is to survive." Yesterday it lost a £100,000 contract from car firm Warranty Direct which said it would switch to "more reliable" email.

Its easy for R/Mail to recover this money, if both BIG FAIL Al & Cozier don't get a bonus next year money saved already, plus if they also renogotiate the `DSA` deal, the money is recovered in full, plus a profit!!!!! Do you know, I think I have found the solution to R/Mails problems, its easy this Management `thing` don't you think?
