A POSTAL worker stole thousands of pounds worth of packages to fund her own lavish lifestyle.

Long-serving Royal Mail employee Jane Davies went “wildly off the rails” as she embarked on a major crime spree at Gatwick Mail Centre.

GUILTY: Jane Davies admitted five counts of theft from Royal Mail at Crawley Magistrates Court

The 55-year-old, of Falcon Close, Langley Green, stole scores of items including retail vouchers, gift cards and cash between February 1 and May 24 this year.

She is also alleged to have stolen a packet containing £1,000 in cash addressed to Debbie Matheson from her uncle.

Davies, who has been employed with the firm since January 2000, pleaded guilty to five counts of theft when she appeared at Crawley Magistrates’ Court today (Wednesday).

The court was told the thefts amounted to a total value of more than £4,000.

strange set of values where she judges her level of guilt based on the value of the items stolen.

Stealing I empty card is wrong, and its just as wrong as stealing £5 million or more - permanently reliving someone of their legal property is scummy whatever the monetary value.

Crawley postal worker stole thousands of pounds of mail

A POSTAL worker stole thousands of pounds worth of packages so she could buy expensive treats.

Long-serving Royal Mail employee Jane Davies went "wildly off the rails" as she embarked on a major crime spree at Gatwick Mail Centre.

The 55-year-old, of Falcon Close, Langley Green, stole mail including retail vouchers, gift cards and cash between February 1 and May 24 this year.

She is also alleged to have stolen a package containing £1,000 in cash addressed to a woman from her uncle.

Davies, who has been employed with the firm since January 2000, pleaded guilty to five counts of theft when she appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court last Wednesday.

Natalie Mcnamee, prosecuting, told the court the thefts amounted to a total value of £4,191, not including items taken of an unknown value.

Geoff White, defending, said: "This is a lady of good character who, over a short period of time, has gone wildly off the rails.

"She has had some significant mental health issues and she took a route which was inappropriate and unlawful."

Davies admitted opening mail in search of money and took vouchers to the value of £1,600 belonging to Royal Mail itself and about £600 in cash.

During the same dates she also stole a further £75 cash, six tickets to an event at Hickstead Showground, three National Book tokens, and gift cards for Squires, Next, One4all, Fatface and Toys R Us.

On or around May 9 she stole a number of high street vouchers and gifts cards for Sainsbury's, Asda, Marks & Spencer and Argos, many of which she redeemed.

Her actions soon after this incident sparked the police investigation, as she was identified on CCTV using vouchers to buy a new Samsung mobile phone from Argos.

But the most significant haul occurred between May 20 and May 24, when she took three bundles of mail containing 111 separate packages.

Of these, 104 were addressed to the Australian Lottery and contained hundreds of pounds in cash and credit card details, which she used to buy even more personal items.

The defendant also admitted a sixth count of theft, but denied it contained the alleged sum of £1,000.

Mr White added: "She works in the heart of the postal system where she deals with damaged packets.

"She said she would have remembered taking £1,000, because it is rare for packages of that value to go through the Royal Mail."

Davies was released on unconditional bail to appear at the same court again on October 15.

Before then, the Royal Mail will consider the sixth charge of theft with a view to amending the details of what it says was taken.
