Workers at the Royal Mail in Ipswich have voted in favour of industrial action over plans to close the town’s sorting office and relocate some jobs to Chelmsford.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) today announced 70% of workers had voted for action, but what form that will take is not yet known.
Royal Mail – which is preparing for privatisation – has told staff that 139 sorting office jobs will be affected when all sorting currently undertaken in Ipswich is moved to Chelmsford.
A spokesman for the CWU said: “The CWU has made representations not only for the 139 jobs that would be lost, but also for protecting the current postal service the people of Ipswich and surrounding areas receive.”
A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said that the consultation on the future of the Ipswich sorting office, which started in November last year, was continuing.
However the current thinking of the company was that it would start winding down sorting operations in Ipswich next autumn and all sorting would transfer to Chelmsford by the summer of 2015.
Royal Mail spokeswoman, Sally Hopkins, said: “It is disappointing that our colleagues based at the Ipswich mail centre and delivery office have voted in favour of industrial action. We remain hopeful that the issues can be resolved locally and we continue to talk. “
“We urge the CWU not to call our people out on strike action, which can only hurt our customers and damage our business and our drive to build a strong and sustainable future for Royal Mail.”
A meeting is now due to take place within the next few days with representatives and members of the CWU to decide on the next course of action.

Royal Mail workers in Ipswich have voted for industrial action over the proposed transfer of posts to Essex.
The company said it was looking to move processing jobs to Chelmsford as part of a national reorganisation, although no final decision had been made.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said it would affect at least 139 of the roughly 230 people who work at the Commercial Road site in Ipswich.
The union said 70% of members who voted backed the industrial action.
It said the turnout for the ballot of its members was about 65%.
CWU said the move to Chelmsford had not been agreed with the union and it had a number of concerns.
Royal Mail said no final decision had been made.
A spokesperson said Royal Mail was "fully committed to the process of trying to resolve concerns".

Believe me it will be a lost cause, this Union agreed to the closure of Mail Centres and Royal Mail just tick the boxes and cease them with or without our agreement.

To be fair MC/DO closures are always going to be without agreement as no one is ever going to agree to the closure of their office are they?Red Robbo wrote:Believe me it will be a lost cause, this Union agreed to the closure of Mail Centres and Royal Mail just tick the boxes and cease them with or without our agreement.
