Royal Mail is consulting on a proposed change to their parcels format. The proposals apply to consumers, small non-contract business and franking customers.
The proposal is to extend the dimensions of Small Parcels so that items of up to 350 x 250 by 160mm would now be classed (and priced) as a Small Parcel.
The proposed new size is approximately the size of a large shoebox. Parcels up to 450 x 350 by 80mm would also continue to be priced as Small Parcels. Small Parcels can typically be carried on foot by posties as they complete their delivery rounds, as long as the weight does not exceed 2kgs.
The change would mean that over 80% of parcels delivered by Royal Mail would qualify as Small Parcels.
The proposal follows changes to Royal Mail’s parcels portfolio in April, which gave consumers the ability for the first time to send parcels between 1kg and 20kg using Royal Mail’s 2nd Class service, with the added option to receive a signature on delivery.
The new proposal has come about after customer feedback, and discussion with stakeholders, including eBay, suggesting a revised Small Parcel dimension, as items such as clothing and small electrical equipment have dimensions that typically exceed the current Small Parcel format.
Nick Landon, Managing Director of Royal Mail Parcels, said: “The postal market is changing with the UK parcels market continuing to grow as consumers increasingly shop and sell online. Royal Mail is responding to these trends by updating its parcel services. We will consider further updates if customer feedback in the future indicates we should”.
The consultation will conclude on October the 16th meaning the change could be introduced later in October in plenty of time for the busy Christmas season.

Proposal to amend Inland Letter Post Scheme in relation to universal parcels
Royal Mail has launched a consultation on plans to revise the exception to the USO Small Parcel format which was introduced in April 2013. The new exception will enable customers sending items which do not exceed 350mm x 250mm x 160mm (approximately the size of a large shoebox) to be priced as Small Parcels. Royal Mail is of the opinion this would be a beneficial change for our customers, as it will enable more items to be priced as a Small Parcel. Customers who have bought the cube exemption size packaging will still be able to post as a small parcel with this extended size.
All responses to the consultation should be submitted by 5pm on 16 October 2013.

Re: Royal Mail propose extending small parcel size
So they've realised what a massive c@%k up they made in April and are now trying to dress it up as 'customer feedback' etc.
What a bunch of to##ers they are.

Too late they have lost far too much of that business to the likes of My Hermes, I doubt those users will come back, as they get free collections too!

Re: Royal Mail propose extending small parcel size
It took Royal Mail long enough to realise what most OPG'S probably realised in the first week of the Price changes, when Royal Mail declared that they were now a Parcel company and promptly drove into the arms of the compertition a large part of the Parcel/Packet customers overnight.
What a bunch of clowns. If the Government and Royal Mail think we are over paid. what about the directors who have no comercial sence what so ever.

Well if they did I certainly didn't notice a huge drop off in parcels.
Slightly less of the largest maybe but other than that.....nope.
Did anyone else notice a large drop off in parcels lately?
Parcels only seem to be going one way to be honest.
Same for ParcelForce according to to the PF guy who comes to our office.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

The consultation will probably conclude that the public wants anything that will fit into a van defined as a Small Parcel.

Fishtank,
I did notice a drop of in the number of parcels, overall they have been growing very fast and the growth may have outstripped the loss of business in some instances. I am a avid user of mail order as well as a postman and I can tell you that the businesses and ebay sellers that I order from have left Royal Mail for many items because of this and other changes made to the service.

They'll never "admit" to anything of the sort, just like they never admit they made a mistake with this, that or the other. Years of crazy ideas dreamt up by pen-pushers that know nothing about the job that have slipped in to obscurity, yes they cocked up but they've never admitted it!db wrote:So basically there admiting that they fûcked up!
Too late anyway, business HAS been lost, just because its been made up by an increase is irrelevant, it's still a loss due to the clueless management. The same management that has pushed for privatisation etc..
