Cuddling Bishop Auckland postman celebrates 50 years of wedded bliss

A RETIRED postman who wed the girl next door 50 years ago said the secret to a happy marriage was plenty of cuddles.

Ken and Marjorie Briggs, from Bishop Auckland, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday (September 15) with family and friends.

The pair met when they were both 18 and Mr Briggs’ family moved in next door to Mrs Briggs home on Murphy Crescent in Bishop Auckland.

The couple, now living on Fleet Street, said it was love at first sight and they were married on September 14, 1963.


Mr Briggs started as a miner before working in factories and then spending the last 28 years of his working life as a postman in Bishop Auckland.

Mrs Briggs meanwhile worked as a secretary as the couple moved around the North-East and spent time in Harrogate in North Yorkshire before returning to Bishop Auckland.

The couple, both 72, who also enjoyed many trips abroad, have two children, Julie, 48, and Alison, 45, and five grandchildren.

Mr Briggs said: “The secret to being happy is to have lots of love and trust for the other person, as well as plenty of cuddles.”

Mr Briggs also thanked friends and family who raised £350 for the Alzheimer’s Society at the couple’s anniversary party.

Mr and Mrs Briggs, who are both avid followers of Bishop Auckland FC, asked for donations in lieu of presents.
