If ever there was a job designed for part-time working it's line manager, just about justifiable when there are hundreds of OPGs running about and mail to be sorted but kind of ludicrous when it's just down to the caller's office, the cleaner and six managers. :left:
This is true Fish, it takes a stint of light indoor duties to actually see what goes on. Once the staff go out not a lot happens till the 12.45 conference call.

Tbh they could take out a walk themselves, however that would rob overtime out of the office.

I agree. When you eventually do your back in and get put on light/indoor duties (it'll happen eventually), then you'll get a good look at what actually goes on.. Or doesn't go on..

You see when they all stand around the IPS chatting and watching us work our bollocks off? Yeah, that's as hard as it gets for a manager. Except for that one time a year the auditor pops around and they s**t themselves for 5 minutes. Then they resume normal procedure of doing sod all.

One has a clipboard. One makes coffee. One picks up trays and moves the occasional york. One enforces hi vis vests and other pointless crap is enforced. One sniffs around the office and goes spying in the afternoon to catch people out. And the DOM tells everyone's lies before he pisses off home at 10.30am.

Hmm, ours here must be more organised. At 10.15 they clear down IPS of all the missorts that haven't been taken and hide them somewhere in case there's an audit. Of course, if they were managing properly there shouldn't be hundreds of missorts still there after dispatch. I've considered phoning the tip line :shhhhh And as someone who did ASAP years ago I can attest to how little they do for the following four hours.
The machine stops.

Let's be fair, most managers don't even know what they do.
Or what they're supposed to do.

After a year and a bit at RM all I've seen managers do is bully people into overtime and lapsing (I'm guessing so they don't have to?) and sometimes throw the odd letter in the IPS frame!
How exactly do RM choose their managers? I'm yet to meet one with any people skills or a reasonable IQ level!? Either their excellent at lying their way through an interview or RM really like the bullying angle?

They take the only people willing (or too stupid to refuse) to do whatever they are told to by the next manager in line.
Usually the laziest postman become 'managers'.

I personally don't blame them for doing the min required work. Who would not. :hmmmm

What is wrong is how RM (think WCM) bangs on about our efficiency always being below standard and how we need to fill every employed minute yet they let this sort of thing go on.

In every other industry that ive seen or heard about your workload and attendance time increases along with your pay scale and most likely you’re the last one out of the door at the finish of the day.

Its just unheard of for managers to go home 3 hours earlier (being paid) than staff on a sat. Yet on Monday have to stand up and read some RM propaganda along the lines of how we need to work smarter and longer. :d'oh!

Also a stepping stone for union reps and reps who are voted out are often turned into managers..

Of all the places I've worked RM has the most unskilled manages i've ever come across, they wouldn't even be fit for supervisory roles in other companies!

As I've said before most line managers are in actual fact supervisors as their role is limited to overseeing the workforce. A DOM or a MC Shift Manager would be the minimum that outside industry would recognise as being a manager as they have more responsibility for such things as budgets and can influence the day to day operation, liaise with other functions, report to senior management and manage ..... the supervisors !!! I came into RM some 25 years ago and was gob-smacked at the number of clerical or admin staff whop were called .... managers when clearly many of them are not mainly due to the fact that they have no direct reports.

As for the quality of the current RM manager .... I'll leave it to other contributors to comment.

Somebody wrote a post on this forum saying that 'Delivery Offices could not function without 'B&H' ..and to me that sums everything up, because its true. I think its the only qualification needed to qualify to become a DOM is the ability to bully.
Saying that though I wouldn't say all managers are bullies but the majority are..more so the DOMS.

I also think moya is well aware of what goes on but chooses to ignore the situation because as far as shes concerned its a job well done, that's why she rewards the DOMS with huge bonuses..this is a huge incentive for the conscienceless money grabbing DOM.

Moya Greene is ultimately responsible for the national industrial action ballot about to take place. She is entirely responsible for the shambles in which the BT2010 Agreement has been handled and the reckless way in which modernisation has been managed in those units that have been through the changes. It is down to her mismanagement, that shop floor management have been able to ride rough shod over workers who have had to endure all kinds of harassment, humiliation, intimidation and bullying, and yes although CWU are not blameless in allowing this to fester year on year, it is she who had the ultimate power to change this third world way of going about transformation.

Who wants their £2000 of shares to be worth £2000 or more in three years time when we cash them in? I know I do so as it's our shares cash we want the company running smooth and at minimum cost. We must get rid of these lazy non jobs so we can max our share value - surely we must have a say in how our company is run.
Also how come the managers get shares when they are wasting wages and opposed to strikes and still get paid when we don't cos we are striking? :evil/mad
Why are lino's paid full-time ??
