Union workers have confirmed that a two week postal strike has been averted after last-ditch talks proved fruitful.

Chris Webb, divisional representative for the Communication Workers Union, tweeted the result last night.

Two week postal strike off says union official

He said: "What a week so far. Resolved postal disputes in Bridgwater, Cornwall, Tavistock and Plymouth."

He had previously described there being a "huge gap" between CWU and Royal Mail before on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.

The result means the two week strike, planned to begin on Monday, will no longer go ahead.

Mr Webb said: "The agreement achieves both of our key aims - to enforce all national agreements and to resolve the many local issues.

"This has been made possible by the level of support shown by CWU members to their Union. This clearly shows that workers standing together can achieve results."

However, the union said there will still be a national ballot for strike action next week as workers protest about the privatisation of the company.

The union said industrial action "could not be ruled out."

The Royal Mail said it was "disappointed" that the representative union had decided to ballot members.

Spokesman Rhys Jones said: "We believe a strike is uncalled for, given the highly competitive three year pay offer and legally-binding and enforceable agreement we have offered CWU.

"Royal Mail will do all that we can to protect our business and our customers' mail across our businesses and minimise the impact of any strike action.

"We are committed to the on-going talks with the CWU to reach a new agreement and calls on the CWU to focus on these rather than preparing for industrial action."

:hmmmm So in a nutshell then "to enforce all national agreements" something the CWU has failed to do over the three years of the agreement - "to resolve the many local issues" which clearly haven't been resolved and so the issues are still there - I'll bet the members in that area are really impressed with the called off strike. I sincerely hope this isn't the forerunner of the forthcoming national event
