Bridgwater week-long postal strike called off

A long-running dispute between postal workers and Royal Mail bosses in Somerset has been settled.

Members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) had given management notice of further walkouts in Bridgwater in a dispute over working conditions.

They voted by a three-to-one majority to call off a week-long strike which had been due to start on Monday.

The dispute followed union claims of excessive workloads, bullying and money said to be owed.

CWU spokesman Dave Wilshire said the agreement had been made with Royal Mail after some "lengthy and difficult" negotiations which followed nine-days of industrial action.

"An agreement has been concluded that places the union back at the centre of all decisions that are made in Royal Mail Bridgwater.

"Crucially it states that changes will not be made until agreement is reached," he added.

Correct - and this should help that situation. As an MC man I understand that this may not appear to be the case but 99% of the managerial B&H in deliveries is around unachievable workloads, duties that are too large, or that don't have the correct resources, false accusations of capability issues, unpaid and enforced overtime. Having a back to work agreement that says it must be agreed should help tackle the issue, though it won't resolve it completely.
