Post by angiepie02 »

The Christmas casual jobs go up tomorrow, I worked there last year and enjoyed it.

Could somebody please break down the hourly rates for me again?

Thank you :Very Happy

This year its £6.31p/h for early and back shift.

£6.80 for nightshift (which is absolutely shite)

£7.80 for Sunday shift and £8.80 for Sunday night shift.

The pay will also be different if you are younger - slightly above or at minimum wage for your age. It should say in the information for the job you are applying for.

I am being paid £6.58 p/h for a night shift. Am I getting ripped off more than usual for a Christmas casual? I have seen people quoting hourly rates between £6.80 and £7.90.

It is age and location dependent.

Most locations have different pay rates - some differ more than others. I don't know the complete ins and outs of the Royal Mail pay system. They also have different pay for younger people based around national minimum wage as you are 30 it would not be age related.

As you are 30 it does sound like you may be getting less than you should on nights. Check your applications on the website you applied to - it should tell you there what your pay should be.

So what should I do next..

I applied through the Royal Mail website assuming I would be employed directly by Royal Mail, the pay grade shown was £8.11 p/h.

I quickly found I was being passed off to an agency (later discovering the agency was actually part of the Royal Mail group). Upon phoning the agency I am told the £8.11 was only for staff who work more than 12 weeks (AWR). So where can I find a transparent overview of the hourly rates I can expect?

Obviously asking around at work, or on this forum is not going to help me here. I can already see I am getting a reduced rate, but have no idea by how much.

The pay rate on your offer letter is what you will be paid per hour. You should have got your offer letter on the day, if you didn't your need to wait for the offer letter to come through with more information.

I did not get such a letter. I have already worked 9 shifts over 4 weeks. Feel like a bit of a mug now. Will try talking to Angard tomorrow, but think I will get the brush off.

Probably time to find something different. Royal Mail seem like a total con. Such a shame, because I worked really hard and the people were great.

Angard have different pay rates than RM Christmas casuals and the amount you have said sounds like what we would have got at nights as Angard causals pre-AWR qualification. Once reason I never did nights until I qualified for AWR.

I dont understand this, are you saying some people are employed directly by RM as casuals? Would that explain the higher rate quoted above.

I just went through the application on the RM recruitment site, why is it I was passed on to the agency?

It may not help me now, but surely it would be useful to advise others how to avoid this scam. On my last shift there were a whole new group of Manpower casuals who had more official looking ID cards, are these the RM workers on a higher rate.

Seems like a crazy way to encourage people to join the team at the busiest part of the year.
