UNION officials are set to meet with the Royal Mail for crunch talks in an attempt to ward off a possible two week strike.
As previously reported in The Herald, officers at the Communication Workers Unio (CWU) had offered postal managers the chance for a last ditch meeting to resolve the issue.
The CWU says undue pressure has been applied on staff to cover the postal rounds of those who are sick or on holiday, in addition to their own.
Royal Mail have confirmed that Plymouth managers are set to meet with CWU representatives on Tuesday and Thursday next week.
A spokesman said they are "committed" to finding middle ground.
If a resolution is not agreed then 500 postal workers could strike for two weeks, as of Monday September 9.
CWU divisional representative, Chris Webb, said: "We welcome the offer of talks from Royal Mail but there is a huge gap that needs to be closed before we are anywhere near reaching an agreement.
"Our members are resolute in their support for the planned strikes but we will do everything possible to bring the negotiations to a successful conclusion."
CWU branch secretary, Ralph Ferrett, said: "The fantastic support from CWU members in this area has finally brought Royal Mail to the table. We can only hope that they see sense over the next week and we avoid any disruption to the postal services across Devon and Cornwall."
Royal Mail spokesman, Rhys Jones, said: "We can confirm that we have agreed to meet with the CWU on Tuesday and Thursday of next week.
"We are fully committed to continuing to talk to find a resolution to the concerns of those workers in Plymouth. We want to make it work."

Every agreement that has been made hasn't been adhered to. The only solution is to get rid of the managers and the CWU reps that keep on falling for their guff.aiden01 wrote:liars
