Parents’ fears after postie dog-bite attack in Meltham

A parent has raised concerns over his children’s safety after a dog which savaged a postman has been allowed to return home.

Graham Walland’s five children live with his ex-partner Suzanne Ingham yards from Copley Avenue where postman Jason Lee was attacked by a dog on July 9.

But despite the dog initially being seized by police after it took a large bite out of Mr Lee’s forearm it has returned home and residents claim it has been spotted roaming without its owner.

Police have said they cannot prosecute because the incident took place in a private garden.

Mr Walland, 41, said: “I’ve been told the dog has just been allowed to go back to its owner as it is not a banned breed.

“I find it disturbing that an animal that can do something like the horrific injuries I’ve seen to a postman can be allowed to return home. What it could do to a small child doesn’t bear thinking about.

“Police can’t do anything because it happened on private property but what about next time?”

He said he is concerned, particularly with the start of school autumn term, that his children – three boys and two girls with ages ranging from five to 16 – will be put at risk.

Meanwhile, as reported in the Examiner, Royal Mail has continued to suspend deliveries to three homes in the area, and residents have been told to collect their post from the Holmfirth delivery office.

Delivery has resumed to one of the previously affected properties.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Following a risk assessment carried out July 19, three addresses remain affected.

“The safety of our staff is paramount to Royal Mail. Their deliveries will be resumed as soon as Royal Mail is satisfied that our people will not be at risk.

“We continue to monitor the situation and are working with the owner of the dog to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.

“We apologise to those customers who remain affected. In the meantime, affected customers can continue to collect their mail from Holmfirth delivery office or contact the delivery office on 01484 680997 to make alternative arrangements”.

Pretty sure the dog owner doesn't give a s**t about anyone other than himself/herself.
If they did they would have done the responsible thing and had the dog destroyed.
Or trained it properly in the first place/kept it on a lead.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.
