Union in final plea to Royal Mail in bid to avoid postal chaos

Officials of the Communication Workers Union have today offered last ditch talks to Royal Mail in a bid to avoid a dispute which could disrupt postal services in the Plymouth Area for up to two weeks.

Strike plans agreed by CWU Representatives on the back of record ballot results are currently being put to members that would see the six units affected take strategic action across a two week period from 9th September. If the dispute goes ahead it will be the biggest ever official local strike in the Plymouth area involving over 500 postal workers.

Areas of disagreement include allegations of bullying, breaches of national and local agreements as well as threats to close and relocate offices.

CWU Branch Secretary Ralph Ferrett said: "We now have a very finite period of time to resolve this dispute ahead of any potential action commencing on the 9th September. We urge Royal Mail to use that time wisely to listen to our members concerns and find the solutions that would enable us to call off the strikes"

CWU Divisional Representative Chris Webb said: "The local disputes currently taking place in Plymouth, Cornwall, Bridgwater and Weston Super Mare are indicative of an employer that is taking an increasingly aggressive stance. We now have a window of opportunity to seriously attempt to avoid strike action and disruption to the services that we provide our customers.

"The CWU and postal workers have not taken these decisions lightly. Record strike ballot results should have signalled the level of discontent to Royal Mail. The call for action is not a threat but a last ditch attempt by the CWU to protect our members and ensure that they can come to work and be treated with dignity and respect on a daily basis."

Think I'll go with RM refusing to hold proper and meaningful talks.
They'll allow the strike to happen, and lay all the blame on the posties, for being unreasonable or something.

Good luck to those staff involved and affected.
