Very doubtfill, the land is probably worth too much for RM to not consider selling it, the current DO based there will most likely move onto an industrial estate

Last we heard the building was worth around £1M, the Dely Rep informed me that the DO wouldn't be moving but they are now operating as 3 separate DO's in the one building on different floors, the DOM said it was in case they had to move at a moments notice so read into that what you will, local council are now involved so we'll see what happens there, the rivalry between the two cities isn't just about football, we both fight for the same business, be it on land or at sea, Portsmouth is the home of the Royal Navy and has been a city longer than Southampton, its also bigger in population if you take into account the fact that Pompey people were moved out of the city after WWII onto estates outside the city boundary, indeed Portsmouth is still the most densely populated city in western Europe, Southamptons claim to fame is the Spitfire which was designed and built there and its liner traffic, it has also used its redundant dockland better than Portsmouth, but then our dockland has been heavily contaminated over the years with munitions dumps etc. we also have a problem in that BAE systems might well relocate their shipbuilding section to Scotland, which will cost even more jobs, so all in all not a very happy time on the jobs front, If I have to drive a 40 miles round trip to work every day then so be it, but we certainly won't go down without a fight, and tbh there is no need to close Portsmouth, this is just about privatisation and making more profit for shareholders, and perhaps if every PO and SO mailcentre and DO where to help us in our fight then maybe RM will back off, even if only for the time being, after all folks, do you want to get your work even later than you do now?

POMC is one of the last of the old multi-storey city centre MLOs, and RM has been closing those for the last decade or more. Traffic issues (in the most densely populated city in Western Europe), parking problems (aren't the vans now parked in a location away from the MC?) plus a reliance on lifts (and the incredibly under-staffed and inefficient ROMEC to service and repair them) means the MC is just out-dated and in the wrong location.
Factor in the old automation there ( a decision to not update would have been taken over ten years ago when the iLSM contract was placed) and it's clear that the MC's days were considered to be numbered a decade ago, which is long before this privatisation plan reared it's ugly head.

We were getting an iLSM apparently but it was cancelled, the last valuation on the building was £1M its not in a good position being apart from the main shopping centre, there are still multi floor town centre mail centres the review team themselves have said it's not a reason, don't think RM is gonna shut mount pleasant do you? This is to do with making savings by reducing the MC network, even Moya has said that, the new double decker trailers will not fit into the mail yard either, so this isn't a decision that's been 10 years in the making, in fact a review was carried out at least 10 years or more ago about merging the two mail centres and an option taken out on land at Segensworth but it was deemed not feasible, a big deal is made about it not being a problem increasing the distance that collections have to go because there's less of it, probably true for letters and flats if they can be machined but we're a parcel business now aren't we? They take time and space

One rumour going round is that Slindon Street will stay open as an upgraded delivery office. Very last IOW post will be processed here (manually) and Slindon Street will also be used for Xmas packets etc.

Outhouse will close with the mailsort people/work coming back to Slindon Street.

Greatham Street van park will close - will be enough space at Slindon Street for the PD/transit vans.

More of a cast-iron certainty than a just a rumour. RM is clearly (at least, until the economy picks up enough to sell the site at a profit, or privatisation takes place) going to keep the place as an MPU, but O/W mail processing is moving to SOMC.
It hasn't got, and won't get, iLSMs,and that tells you all you need to know about RM's long-term plans for POMC.

More puzzling is why the closure announcement is being held back..
