I don't know if you got it today music but I got yet another missive from RM telling me what a great deal this is and how privatisation won't affect my terms and conditions one bit...................pity the union aren't as proactive in communicating to the membership.

As I said previously, the Union have been caught short and they have been outmanoeuvred.

RM is winning the propaganda war - not just by sending us more useless pieces of documents that tells us the same thing.

The thing (from my point of view) is that we simply cannot go on strike because of Privatisation - the Union probably knows this.

This is not just because some people (mostly part-timers) will break the strike but because it will be difficult for employees to take such a stance and win. It will not be allowed and the public will soon withdraw their support...

The problem is that the other issues where we could have argued about and possible go on strike (not wise) is now being mixed-up with the Privatisation issue - just too complex and counter-productive.

I suspect the Union were always going to simply threaten and hope for a good 'deal' going forward. They are probably working on the deals now with RM/GOVT but they cannot get any guarantee beyond the 3 years moratorium - which is generous if it is holds for the whole of the 3 years.

In the terms and conditions information, they have even tried to sweeten things by saying that they will continue to rely on a mostly full-time workforce - another googly. So why go on strike - most people will ask?

Lets just wait for the 'Deal' but striking is now too late to have any effect on Privatisation

Sadly, I think you're right. The problem has always been the leadership are reactive, and frankly I don't believe they are up to the task - it's no good just being against something you must have a compelling, viable alternative - like BT 2010, jumping into bed with the management has proven to be clearly a mistake and one which may yet cost us dearly.

BT2010 was the final nail in the coffin for us all, Hailed as a step forward, it's fragmented the CWU's membership.

No amount of striking now is going to regain our dignity & and sence of service that has ebbed away

It's the 22nd of August so to wait until 2nd September isn't an unconscionable time particularly as I think that could well be time spent galvanising a yes vote and a very large proportion of returned ballots. One of the things that is worrying is the thought of many members not returning the ballot paper, either way, YES or NO.
Personally I'll be voting YES and will stand on the picket line as I have always done.
