Workers at Portsmouth processing centre are voting in a consultative ballot over plans to close it with the loss of 380 jobs.
Ruth Harris, Portsmouth CWU branch secretary said, “Workers are very concerned. We have two issues to fight now—the plans to close the mail centre and the Save our Royal Mail campaign.”

This has happened to so many offices but which offices have stayed open after consultative ballots?

Re: POMC to take part in consultative ballot 380 jobs threat
The CWU would do better to put their efforts into ensuring those workers transferring to SOMC get the the best deal possible rather than trying to stop the inevitable and losing, although the usual misinformation in the Socialist Winker doesn't help anyone either.
Sadly the writing was on the wall ten years ago for POMC (when they never had the then-new iLSMs installed) so attempting to keep it open now with obsolete automation is hopeless.
Are the CWU really going to back a loser here or is the ballot just a (somewhat belated) token effort?

Up until now the CWU nationally has adopted a position of negotiating the rationalisation programme and as you say ensuring those workers transferring get the the best deal possible while still allowing the union at local level to pro-actively attempt to fight the closure if that is the local membership's wish.
You could either see that as the best of both worlds or bottling it depending on your perception of the union.
Things have changed lately though as I think the CWU has pulled all support for mail centre rationalisation at all levels.
Whether that's a wise idea is up for debate.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I think they should keep the policy the same for all office closures. It's difficult for all offices and people working at these offices but times change . I remember when they got rid of facing tables and the staff could not handle this..

Mail volumes have dropped why keep a mail centre open when post going in and coming into the area has fallen off the cliff ?

Thats the argument for closing it, why would the Union who are paid by the members support that argument.
It doesn't matter if the Union agrees with the decision, or even if its the most logical overall. The Union is there to represent and support members interests. If the members want to fight closure then thats what the Union should focus on, if not why have a Union in the first place.
