European parcel carrier GLS has launched a new subsidiary operating in the European Union’s newest member, Croatia.

The new company GLS Croatia began operations this month, expanding the Royal Mail-owned network within South Eastern Europe.

GLS said its network in the former Yugoslavian Republic is initially based on four locations, in Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Osijek.

The Zagreb site will serve as national distribution centre, equipped with modern safety and powerful package sorting technology.

Gergely Farkas, the managing director of GLS East Europe, will head up the management of the new subsidiary.

The company is expecting to start up international shipping out of Zagreb from 1st September, including connections to Ljubljana in Slovenia, Ansfelden in Austria and the GLS Europe hub in Neuenstein, Germany. A fast connection to Eastern Europe will run through the GLS hub in Budapest, Hungary.

GLS said it will reach countries like Hungary and Slovenia in 24 to 48 hours, with the usual transit time to the European hub in Germany 72 hours.

Demand

Rico Back, chief executive of the GLS Group, said his firm was focusing on offering international clients in the Southern and Eastern European markets short lead times and extensive services.

He said GLS expects a growth market in Croatia with the benefits of EU membership.

“Once borders and customs are removed, it naturally increases the demand for time-definite deliveries, and so it is important that we have a local presence,” said Back.

The launch of GLS Croatia comes after the company started up operations in Slovakia in 2004, Czech Republic in 2005 and Romania in 2007. The company has been operating in Hungary since 1999, and in Slovaka since 2000.

Amsterdam-based GLS now covers 37 European countries through 37 hubs and 667 depots, with a workforce of 14,000 people and 18,000 vehicles.

The company handled 380m packages in the fiscal year 2012/13, achieving a turnover of EUR 180m.

And lest we forget.............

The greatest genocide during World War II, in proportion to a nation’s population, took place, not in Nazi Germany but in the Nazi-created puppet state of Croatia. There, in the years 1941-1945, some 750,000 Serbs, 60,000 Jews and 26,000 Gypsies – men, women and children – perished in a gigantic holocaust. These are the figures used by most foreign authors, especially Germans, who were in the best position to know… The magnitude and the bestial nature of these atrocities makes it difficult to believe that such a thing could have happened in an allegedly civilized part of the world…
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
