BOLTON residents awoke to find several postboxes appeared to have been painted pink.

But Royal Mail explained that this was not a permanent design change but rather part of a “full refurbishment programme”.

Jayne Hilton tweeted: “Who’s painted the postbox pink on Crompton Way? Looks great!”

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “All postboxes in the Bolton area are undergoing a full refurbishment programme, which consists of sandblasting the box to remove the old paint, then applying a coat of specialist primer — which is pink.

“When the primer is dry, the box is finished in a coat of gloss Royal Mail red paint.”
