A POSTMAN has been left with severe facial injuries after an unprovoked attack in Widnes on Friday.

The 31-year-old victim was driving his work vehicle when a van overtook him and cut in front, preventing him from driving any further.

The offender then approached the victim and demanded he get out of his van before punching him repeatedly in the face.

DC Neil Fleming said: "This was a nasty unprovoked assault that took place late afternoon. It is likely there would have been a lot of people in the area at the time.”

The victim managed to release his seat belt and open the door, but was pulled to the floor by the offender who continued to punch him before running back to his van and driving off.

DC Fleming said: "The victim sustained serious facial injuries as a result of the assault − these included two fractures to his jaw and eye socket, a broken nose and swelling to his face.

“He attended hospital for treatment and has been discharged − but will need further treatment.”

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and bailed in connection with this incident.

Police are appealing for information on the incident which happened at the junction of Vicarage Road and Widnes Road at around 4.50pm.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area and has seen what has happened or has any information, which could assist with our enquires, to come forward," DC Fleming said.

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 762 of 26 July or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
