The real issue is why are there good/best walks and the dregs? We all deliver letter into letter boxes so the work should be fair... So offices have had major revisions and yet the duties are still not fair - people should have kicked off about that issue before the revisions are signed off.royalmailslave wrote:spoodoo wrote: I'm the same ....just short of 16 years service...and I've ended up with the dregs
The part timers...some with less than 18 months service end up worth the best walks,I've been out the union around 5 years now...they've sold us down the river far too many times,il consider rejoining when Ward and Hays are no longer at the helm

Wish that were true. Give the duties to people best capable of doing them. Seniority just means you get first pick of the lightest duties.mumphy wrote:Does`nt anybody realise that seniority is against the law, it is excepted by the CWU, but it is against the law...and should not play apart in any workplace decisions

Seniority is a joke in my opinion. Never experienced anything like it in any other job. Ten years or ten days service, your still just a postie doing the same job. Is it any wonder staff turnover is so high amongst new starts. Just another example of gross mismanagement at royal mail.

The Equality Act 2010 allows people with longer service to be treated more favourably. If the person being treated less favourably has more than 5 years service, then the employer has to reasonably believe that treating that person less favourably fulfils a business need. Wrong, although it is a generally received notion that using seniority is automatically illegal. Its not illegal if the business can make a case that it fills a business need.mumphy wrote:Does`nt anybody realise that seniority is against the law, it is excepted by the CWU, but it is against the law...and should not play apart in any workplace decisions

The Equality Act therefore provides that any benefit based on a length of service requirement of 5 years or less is lawful. In addition, the Act says that it won't be unlawful to provide different levels of benefit based on length of service of more than 5 years where the employer “reasonably believes that doing so will fulfil a business need” , e.g. by encouraging loyalty, increasing motivation, or rewarding the experience of some or all of your workers. Nevertheless, an employer would need evidence to conclude that there is a benefit to the organisation from providing rewards directly linked to age. There is an obligation on the employer to objectively justify any provision, criterion or practice as a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

I'm pretty sure seniority will just go when the business is privitised.
On a different note regarding how easy/walks are. In our office there are some very close walks and one can be very difficult and one very easy. Why not mix them up a bit? We all have a van now!

Always see plenty of moaning about seniority but nobody ever posts a workable alternative(one that wouldn't be subject to managers favouritism) Answers on a postcard? (Help the business too
)
Surely it would be better for posties with offices that have great disparities in difficulty of duty to put their energies into equaling them out rather than just whinging. The problem isn't seniority,it's the fact that some offices must of made up and voted in s**t duties,whose fault is that?

Couln't agree more. Let most suitable people do the walks. Not just the one's who want an easy life! Get off your arses and do some work. Some people don't know when they're well off. Try doing a proper job and see how you like it!!!mumphy wrote:Does`nt anybody realise that seniority is against the law, it is excepted by the CWU, but it is against the law...and should not play apart in any workplace decisions

We're just about to enter delivery methods and go World Class and i've got 16 years seniority and surprise, surprise i've lost my walk!! Seems to be a repeat pattern across the country. I'm 15th on the list theres still about 20 walks but me and 2 other full timers can't pick! Onto the part timers to pick... Back to the sh*t on a stick reserve jobs...

Re: Seniority ,,,
Apparently there needs to be full time reserves for 1 in 6 and annual leave. Oh and the fact that a part timer is a our un-voted in rep!
£3.43 a week to be shafted by the union...
At best we only have around 9 full timers at anyone time in work yet we've got to be super sorters, super preppers & porters and all the other trash ideas... No part timers are being made up to full time so we'll just stagnate at the bottom of the list like I have since 2003...
