Re: Had enough - I've taken VR
Not so sure about that. Some of the people at my MC got transfers to DOs by 'bumping' - ie the DOs were given VRs to make vacancies for them.the mad woman wrote:In delivery offices we got no chance ever of getting this
But certainly more chance of VR/EVR in MCs as they are being merged and closed with duties being cut.

Re: Had enough - I've taken VR
Problem is most delivery offices are already carrying vacancies,a deliberate cost saving measure driven by the boardroom.baldrick wrote:Not so sure about that. In areas where there have been MC closures i could see it happening but outside of that it's unlikely.
Turnover of staff is still high in delivery despite the economic conditions.

Re: Had enough - I've taken VR
^ Thanks again for the good wishes. I am enjoying retirement. I had thought I might be bored, but I'm not. Finding enough to keep me occupied (including rmc!) and not missing work at all.

Re: Had enough - I've taken VR
Good luck Baldrick - I am sure life will be full. Many of my retired customers have said that when you eventually finish work you wonder how you had the time to do it and in almost exactly a year now I will test that idea. I had hoped I might get a VR offer but now entering my last year I am more determined to leave with the thought that the job didn't beat me. To be honest, apart from the "usual" aches and pains of someone approaching 65 - I remain relatively fit and active and trust that you are the same. I plan to do some voluntary work and get back to walking in my beloved peak district when I get my freedom but if you discover any other exciting "things for old gits to do" then post them up here

Re: Had enough - I've taken VR
@rhino49. Thanks mate. I'm in quite good shape for my age. I did use to get some back pain when I was working but it seems to have gone now. Although I was in a MC I did a fair amount of physical work, I was working on platforms loading and unloading lorries and wheeling yorkies around the floor for the last few years. I used to walk 3 miles into work most days. I have put on some weight especially round my middle over the last few weeks. I'll have to get round to doing some exercise - but not just yet!
I haven't really done that much since I took VR, just relaxing, gardening, reading, listening to the radio and watching tv. I've spent many days during this hot weather just lying in a hammock looking at the trees and sky. I should be doing some redecorating but putting that off for now. I would like to do some day or evening classes, but that might not be possible this year as I want to go away somewhere warm in January and February to escape the dark and cold of winter.
It has helped that we've had good weather for the last 3 weeks. I can enjoy it, I expect it will be like an oven at my old mc.
I had intended to do some walking outside London but only done one so far. There are a lot of museums in London I want to visit. And as I've got my Freedom Pass now I can travel round London for free. Only been to the RAF museum at Hendon so far, but intend to go to the Imperial War Museum soon. I want to go and watch some trials at the Old Bailey too. But these are things to do when summer is gone. I've applied to do some voluntary archaeological excavation on an old Roman site, and will be looking at doing some volunteering with the British Conservation Volunteers.
When I was younger I would have felt the need to go out and be doing something, but now I'm quite content to stay at home and take it easy. I haven't been bored at all, but if I do I might look for a temporary Xmas job in November/December - but not with Royal Mail!
You are on your final lap now with the finish in sight. It will come soon enough and I am sure you will enjoy retirement when it comes, and you will deserve it.

No way! I've seen how the temp staff are treated by Royal Mail. If I do look for a temp job in November/December there are plenty of other employers taking on extra staff.maisymoo04 wrote:So you will be sorting at Xmas then![]()
